Hillary's Vaccine Shortage
National Center for Family Analysis ^ | August 18, 2003 | National Center for Family Analysis

"Everyone knows America's vaccine industry is in serious trouble, with an ever dwindling number of producers and recent severe vaccine shortages. What everyone also should know is that the National Academy of Science's Institute of Medicine has now pinned much of the blame on the government vaccine-buying program promoted by former First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The panel of doctors and economists issuing a report on vaccines last week identified as a fundamental cause of the problem the fact that the government purchases 55 percent of the childhood vaccine market at forced discount prices. The result has been "declining financial incentives to develop and produce vaccines."

The root of this government role goes back to August 1993, when Congress passed Clinton's Vaccines for Children program. The plan, promoted by the Children's Defense Fund, was to use federal power to ensure universal immunization. So the government agreed to purchase a third of the national vaccine supply (the President and Mrs. Clinton had pushed for 100 percent) at a forced discount of half price, then distribute it to doctors to deliver to the poor and the un- and under-insured."

This is the cause why there are not enough flu vaccine around. The only supplier left is the one in England. Nobody wants to manufacturer vaccines in the US because "there are no financial incentives" for manufacturers. Furthermore, if the vaccine does not work - the manufacturers could be sued.

Kerry did not say it but this is what the liberals are thinking to do to manage healthcare.

The result has been "declining financial incentives to develop and produce vaccines."...look closely - this is what will happen when the government really gets its hands on the total health care system.......

Yeah so it's an utter failure, big deal. Her INTENTIONS were good. That's all that matters to a leftist.

It's like when Stalin was killing all those people in the Ukraine, his useful idiots here were saying, "well you have to break a few eggs to make an omelet."

"The panel of doctors and economists ---identified as a fundamental cause of the problem the fact that the government purchases 55 percent of the childhood vaccine market at forced discount prices"?

Isn't it interesting that the government buys medicines overseas to save money, but they won't allow us to buy medicines from overseas to save money?

Shades of what the liberals would like to do to prescription drugs-make them so cheap, no one will want to make them, due to costs and risk.

...because "there are no financial incentives" for manufacturers. .....the manufacturers could be sued.

Exactly. I am in a business that, though not medicine, is considered, nonetheless, a "necessity". To provide this "necessity to the "low income" only exposes me to the risk of legal liability and a low return on my labor and investment.

The dirty little secret of socialism is that though necessities will be "free", they will be in short supply, or not exist at all.

This puts the LIE to what Kerry said, that the vaccine shortage is Bush's fault.

Kerry faults Bush for shortage of flu vaccine

By Stephen Dinan
THE WASHINGTON TIMES

ELYRIA, Ohio — Democratic presidential nominee Sen. John Kerry yesterday blamed President Bush for failing to head off a flu vaccine shortage and said it raises the question of whether the president is prepared for worse situations.
He raised the charge while speaking to six women at a health care round table as he campaigned in Ohio, claiming victory in Friday's second presidential debate.
"If you can't plan to have enough of that vaccine, what are they doing with respect to the other things that could potentially hurt America in terms of bioterrorism, chemical terrorism, other kinds of things?" he said.

It can't be Hillary's fault. Everything is Bush's fault, including this. Women and children hardest hit, as if that needed saying.
