No Ladies’ Man (John Kerry has a lame pick-up line)
National Review Online ^ | October 14, 2004 | Carrie Lukas

Desperate men often resort to clichéd lines when trying to snare women. Senator John Kerry must be desperate, because he dragged out the tired, misleading statistic about the so-called wage gap during last night's debate; namely, that women only earn 76 cents for each man's dollar.

This factoid comes from Department of Labor data on the average wage of a full-time working woman and the average wage of a full-time working man. And, yes, if you look at those numbers you will find that the average woman earns about three quarters of the income of the average man.

But that statistic ignores many relevant factors that affect a worker's take-home pay. For starters, it doesn't adjust for number of years worked. On average, women spend about a decade out of the workforce to care for their families. It should come as no surprise to Senator Kerry that a 35-year-old woman reentering the workforce after ten years off earns less than a man or woman who worked continuously during that time.

The wage-gap statistic also fails to consider educational attainment. Today, women earn more than half of all bachelor's and master's degrees, but it wasn't always that way. Older women in the workforce tend to have less education than their male peers, which affected their career path, their salaries, and ultimately Department of Labor data.

Women and men also often have different priorities when assessing employment opportunities. One survey of working women found that for nearly three quarters a flexible schedule was "very important" when considering a job. This means that many women are willing to trade more money for more flexibility or time off.

Sorry but I'm not buying this argument. Women are paid less than men for performing the SAME job. However, it is not Bush's fault.

What Kerry did during the three debates was essentially "throw all the mud you can find against the wall to see if anything sticks."

Some mud will and some won't. It's just a trick. He and Edwards are both snake oil salesmen.

If they really and truly "had plans," why were they not discussed in the year or more then both have been running for the Presidency. All of a sudden on the eve of a debate, they articulate points of their plan? Sounds like they were trying to prevent a true analysis of their plans by the public and the press.

Well, glad to hear that! I think I'll start a law firm (or maybe accounting, etc, ....you name it) & hire only women.

What a market advantage I'll have, since my labor costs will be so low!

Thanks for the tip.

They may receive slightly less in some places...but not around here
Besides if you go into the big institutions schools, hospitals, banks, insurance companies and businesses they have just about replaced men.

They also gaining even in the jobs that have been traditionally cosidered men's jobs construction, police, fire, forestry, farm labor, machine shops, heavy factories, welding, and automotive.

imo

This is flat out FALSE. It is a LIE and PROPAGANDA. And all three together.

See the following from Thomas Sowell "The grand fallacy":

Think about it. If an employer could hire four women for the price of hiring three men, why would he ever hire men at all?

Even if the employer was the world's biggest sexist, he could still not survive in business if his competitors were getting one-third more output from their employees for the same money.

Otherwise, no hard feelings on this topic.

I don't have to have things quoted to me. I see it every day when I compare men's salaries to women's at the company I work for.

I'm with you here, altho I do think, based on recent observation, that things have gotten better for women. Or you might say, it has gotten equally bad for men! Additionally, age discrimination is rampant. I know over-40s engineers and IT pros with current and popular skills passed over in favor of 25 yo's.

Still, in the IT area, men usually make better money and/or get more promotions than women with the equivalent level of experience and skills.

This pic should remind Kerry of how to shotgun a joint when he was in Vietnam. You did know he was in Vietnam, didn't you?

I would agree that it is getting better but the question was whether it was LESS. It is and I see the salaries between the two regularly so no one will be able to convince me otherwise.

I also am in the IT area at a company that was a leader in advancing women.

Sorry but I'm not buying this argument. Women are paid less than men for performing the SAME job.

BS...I was at this place the other night where women were getting all these bills stuffed in their underwear. When I took my pants off they threw me out of place.

"Sorry but I'm not buying this argument. Women are paid less than men for performing the SAME job."

So you're saying that women are smart enough to do the job but not smart enough to negotiate a raise?

One more item.

The same job doesn't mean the same output. For instance, take backhoe operators, both having the same job. If one can perform 50% faster, then that employee can negotiate a far higher pay than the other.

Not when men are in the management positions to hire and set salaries.

Please be more careful. Some women may be paid less than men for the same job. However, they could leave that abusive work enviornment and go somewhere where they are paid what they are worth. I always did men's work and made as much or more than the men I worked with. So, eventually they ended up working for me. People who want the brass ring need to go for it. Or, they can wait around til the federal minimum wage goes to $7/hr in five years.
