Justice Department Sues Pennsylvania to Give Overseas Voters Two More Weeks to Cast Ballots

NEW YORK Oct. 13, 2004 — The Department of Justice has sued Pennsylvania elections officials in an attempt to give overseas voters two more weeks to cast ballots in the Nov. 2 election, according a published report.

The suit, filed Tuesday in Pennsylvania, contends the state failed to send out ballots in time due to a legal dispute over whether they should list independent candidate Ralph Nader, The New York Times reported Wednesday.

Pennsylvania officials said Tuesday that they would fight the lawsuit, arguing that they will help overseas voters by offering overnight deliveries of ballots or allowing them to fax their completed ballots.

"We are confident that no voter overseas, whether military or civilian, will be left out of the election," Kate Philips, a spokeswoman for Gov. Ed Rendell, told the Times.

Earlier this month, the Pennsylvania Department of State advised county officials that they should not send out absentee ballots listing Nader until the courts determine whether he's allowed on the ballot. A ruling on that issue is expected this week.

Similar legal disputes involving Nader and late primaries kept officials in at least eight of the nation's 15 swing states from being able to mail absentee ballots by Sept. 19, the date by which officials say ballots would have had to be mailed in order to be returned on time.

Of those states, Ohio and Washington have already extended their deadlines for overseas voters by 10 days or more.

Good Lord. Still weeks to go and the lawsuits are flying.

No matter who wins (although Bush will), this election may well tear this country apart completely.

Based on Rendell's work on the military ballots in 2000, I've gotta take him at his word.

They still haven't ruled on Nader in PA! You've got to be kidding. I know the wheels of justice turn slowly but this is rediculous. This election has been going on forever and some states still haven't made a decision on Nader. I'm amazed, and wondering if this is a trick to stop overseas voters from voting.

How interesting, considering the Military Times story that the military vote is going to be for Bush, 72 - 17...

It is good news that the JD is watching!!!!
The 2000 election could be a small example of the attempted fraud that we might see in this election....the liberals will stop at NOTHING to win.

It absolutely is. It's a news story in itself. In some states, the Democrats waited up until the last day to file their complaints on the Nader ballots. The obvious goal: create chaos in election offices, but more importantly, to make it so that there would not be enough time to send out military ballots and have them returned before Nov. 2.

Top Democrat in Pa house said they will spare no expense to keep Nader off the ballot in this state. Rendell sent a letter to every prison warden reminding them of prisoners right to vote.........Not to mention to scummy Philadelphia Democrat machine ..........they even had a dead ward leader vote last elction.

Keep in mind that both Rendell and Kerry took ChiCom cash for their elections back when ChiCom money was rolling in like ocean waves. We have been asking our legislators to get involved in this Democrat ballot stall. I hope they are not too late?

Hmmmm, indeed I am beginning to think the Nader issue was part of a grand plan. Which would be the Dems resorting to their last option...STEALING THE ELECTION!

I hope the pubbies are on top of this.
