Democrat Denise Majette's campaign on Tuesday blasted The Atlanta Journal-Constitution for supporting Republican Johnny Isakson in the race for U.S. Senate.
"The AJC didn't even bother to give Denise a chance to talk to them" before publishing an endorsement of Isakson on Sept. 27, the Majette campaign charged in a statement sent to reporters and posted online.
Rick Dent, campaign spokesman for Majette, said the congresswoman is also upset that the newspaper's editorial board would not publish her reply to the Isakson endorsement.
"Our contention is that the general election is a different election [from the primary], between two people who have views on many subjects, and there's a comparison and a contrast that we would like to have discussed with the Journal-Constitution board," Dent said. "It's a matter of respect for the political process."
Cynthia Tucker, editorial page editor of the Journal-Constitution, said the editorial board interviewed Isakson and Majette before the primary elections held July 20. The board did not reinterview any of the Senate candidates after the primary.
"We had seen both Isakson and Majette in June when we made our decisions about who to support, who to endorse in the primaries," Tucker said. "We asked them then questions about all the major issues of the day, from Iraq to tax cuts. It seemed quite unlikely that either candidate would change his or her positions on the major issues of the day."
The editorial board endorsed both Isakson, a three-term Cobb County congressman, and Majette, freshman from Stone Mountain, before the Republican and Democratic primaries.
Tucker said the editorial board did not run Majette's letter because it has a policy against running candidates' replies to endorsements. That prevents endless back-and-forth charges between candidates on the editorial pages, Tucker said.
Libertarian Senate candidate Allen Buckley has also expressed frustration with the endorsement process and said he wanted to discuss his views with the editorial board. Tucker said the board has a policy of not interviewing third-party candidates.
If you want on (or off) of my black conservative ping list, please let me know via FREEPmail. (And no, you don't have to be black to be on the list!)
Extra warning: this is a high-volume ping list.
Freepers from Georgia, what's the deal??? Why did she give up her Congressional seat to let McKinney back in? Somebody from McKinney's camp must have had some serious dirt on her.
It's what she gets for inflicting McKinney on the rest of us.
Easy..she took a shot....she has no seniority in the House, and the Dems will be in the minority for the next 20 years, and would you want to have to spend all that time with the Black Caucus, Barney Frank, and Nancy Pelosi?..it's a dead end job for a Dem..she's a smart lady..also, she's to moderate for most of the dems in the House now..so, she bailed..but with honor..the fact that she was willingly, nay eager, to give up a safe Hosue seat is a telling moment on what Dems think about their future in the Hosue..
Majette is MODERATE?Well, maybe compared to Mc Kinney but show me where Majette deviated from the ultra liberal voting records of most of the Cong. Black Caucus?
Johnny Isakson is Democrats' and the AJC's favorite Republican.
It's very difficult for a freshman in the House to go against the leadership..which is another reason why she bailed out..
It is a crime that our supposedly conservative state is about to elect a Cynthia Tucker Republican to be our next Senator-for-Life. (Or, really, given Johnny's record, maybe our Senator-Against-Life.)
I don't know why she gave up her seat. She is going to lose by a very very large margin! Why did the constipation endorse a republican? Good question, I think because they will endorse sKerry they are hedgeing their bet. "Hey we're batting .500"
I'll hold my nose and vote for Johnny on Nov 2nd. He best not pull snuggling up with the other caucus or he'll be a one-termer guaranteed.
THE MEDIA IS ALWAYS SUPPOSED TO SUPPORT DEMOCRATS!!!!!!!!! SOMEBODY CALL THE WAAAAAAAHMBULANCE!!!
Pure arrogance. Jewish activists put huge money on her side to wipe out McKinney last time, and this freak actually thought they would throw money at her once again. STUPID. And so the lady vanishes...
No nose-holding would not be needed for a Candidate Cain. what a shame. I still don't get what happened there wth the Georgia GOP. Did Ralph Reed really prefer Isakson?
