Today Show Promotes Beauty and The Beast View of VP Debate; Early Show's Smith Badgers Matalin

Posted on 10/05/2004 4:33:55 AM PDT by governsleastgovernsbest

Just another day down at the liberal farm this morning at The Today Show and CBS' The Early Show.

Setting up tonight's VP debate, Campbell Brown (daughter of a convicted, corrupt Democrat Louisiana pol) described Edwars as "sunny and upbeat," while labeling Cheney "serious and occasionally dour." Flash to a clip of Cheney looking and sounding particularly 'heavy.'

Harry Smith, over at The Early Show, seems generally to fly under the radar when it comes to spotting liberal media types. But beneath the avuncular mien, he is in fact, he is as liberal, and often as nasty, as any of them.

Interviewing Mary Matalin and Joe Lockhart in the run-up to the VP debate, Matalin said that W has made progress on education.

Smith rudely interrupted, and with a harsh tone, clearly reflecting his own views, stated "but teachers across the country have said he has not delivered on the No Child Left Behind Act." Mary seemed somewhat taken aback by the vigor or Smith's attack.

Quick aside: at GMA, the son of Mario Cuomo, who is an ABC reporter, just did a piece on the parole hearing on John Lennon's killer.

Cuomo wrapped up his report by saying, with a very 'meaningful ' look at Sawyer "imagine if Lennon were alive. Imagine what he would be saying today." Right. Give peace a chance, no blood for oil, and Bush must go. Yeah, we get it.

I prefer my veeps dour and serious. Anyone who thinks being veep is better than a bucket of warm spit and who is "sunny" and upbeat, is not my kind of veep. I want them cranky, dysphoric, ill tempered, oversensitive, insensitive, grim and so on. Besides Dick Cheney is so very sexy. He is sex appeal personified. I like cranky sex objects too.

I need a cup of coffee.

I don't think these silly comparisons are helping the dems. Terrorists aren't afraid of pretty-boys and playboys. A man with a good manicure and well coiffed hair implies a man who doesn't like to get his hands dirty. Fighting terrorism is dirty business. This is not a good tactic. And to hear grown men in the news business fawning over John Edwards youthful good looks .... it's kind of weird! What's there message? Beauty vs. Braun is more like it.

They claim that being "dour" is a disqualifier for the vice presidency---yet look at their *presidential* candiate? The guy is the definition of dour.

Left the house this morning while hearing some talking head on cable mention that Cheney is grandfatherly while Edwards is energetically youthful. Got into the car, turned on the local CBS news channel and heard Cheney is grandfatherly while Edwards is energetic and charismatic.

Hmm. I think I'm seein' a trend here.

So, how did she respond?

I'll take grandfatherly over the way CNN.com is presenting him. In their little Jeanne Moos video feature on their front page, they have a picture of Robin (al a Batman fame) and Darth Vader. Hmmm, I wonder who CNN would see as more a Vader type character?

Speaking of laying down a template and cutting every news story to fit it--

I'm sure you've noticed the absence of any comment as to the lack of "gravitas"on the dim ticket-- two senators who have combined to accomplish nothing.

Four years ago, "gravitas" (or lack thereof) was mentioned dozens of times on one Sunday on four different networks. Mere coincidence, of course.

On the other hand, if I've got terrorists coming after me and my family, which of those two characters would I rather have on my side? I'll take Darth Vader over Robin every day of the week. That characterization may backfire on them.

Somehow, I can see Edwards - the Boy Blunder - in tights. Just on weekends, of course.

As suggested, she was somewhat flustered. She wasn't in the studio and probably didn't hear Smith's comment clearly. But she asserted that W is making progress on education and plans to expand his efforts to the college level.

Since the last election, they've probably forgotten how to spell gravitas.
