Rather traded his credibility to prove that Bush Dishonorable Service should equal DisHonorable Discharge because the SwiftVets have proved now that Kerry had dishonorable service In and are going to prove that he had a Dishonorable Discharge out.
This was worth Rather's reputation and standing to get Kerry elected.
Also it could explain why Jimmy Carter, a pariah and outcast in the Clinton years was given such a showcase at convention because he had the goods on Kerry. And definetly explains why the Old Media has smeared the fine 260 SwiftBoat Vets to such a degree.
I'd place a hundred dollars that this is why Rather gave up his credibility for some 30 year old rumors about Bush that no one, not even his enemies, really cared about. Bush must be thoroughly discredited from 30 years ago before this Jimmy Carter/John Kerry connection comes in.

It has been bugging the heck out of my why no one is getting to the bottome of Kerry's Discharge. Maybe this is it.
IF, and that's a big IF, there's anything to the speculation of funny business regarding Kerry's discharge, Karl Rove and the BC04 campaign aren't going to go within a mile of it. IMHO, anything related to Kerry's military service will come out through the Swiftees.

I believe this train of thought has merit, but the trouble is that, without Kerry's signature on SF180, it can't be proven. I don't want people to feel sympathy for this clown. Sandy Berger stole and destroyed files from the Nat'l Archives, so I have my doubts about whether any of this can be proven, even if Kerry signs the form. I'm more interested in outsourcing our national security to the UN. Speaking of "outsourcing," it was right for the Coalition Forces to let the Afghan citizens handle the Tora Bora mission; it's THEIR country, whether they are "warlords," soldiers or auto workers. Hammid Karzai is in charge in Afghanistan, as is Awad Allawi in Iraq.

I was struck when reading Unfit for Command that some of the things memogate accused President Bush of are the same things Kerry is accused of in this book! IOW he DID have to bring Bush "down to his level" in order for his "superior " combat record to trump.
Kerry has always in previous campaigns discredited his opponent's millitary service as less worthy than his.
E.G. Kerry disobeying orders. (p. 52, 75). So they have to come up with some order Bush "disobeyed". Making the missed physical into disobeying a "direct order!!" required the fake memo . . .
Same with early release (p. 94). Kerry had to show that Bush's early release was somehow "worse" than his . . . Hence the "missing months" charge.
IOW memogate was a forged response to make Bush appear guilty of these things that are documented about Kerry.
I can't remember if anyone said what papers Berger Boy was swiping. I do remember the reporters saying they we just copies, so don't worry about them. But since he was with Kerry's campaign... I wonder...
I absolutely agree. The Swiftees have required solid proof for everything they've put out. O'Neil is a very sharp lawyer and he's not going to expose anyone in the group to legal jeopardy.

While it's nothing more than a gut feel, I think that someone either in, or loosely associated with, SBVfT knows precisely what's contained in Kerry's full Navy records and probably has copies of them.

Rather's story was intended to be the opening for a series of drug-use stories about the President. Rather's sources are shaky, but if the topic can be opened up by means of a TANG story then new sources with poor credentials can be brought in to address particular concerns.
Controversy over the forgeries has locked up this stuff for another week or so but we will see the rest of the drug stuff sometime soon.
Yea I know about the drug stuff. Actually every one of these charges were covered in the 2000 election by Leslie Stahl who did an interview with a guy name J. H. Hatfield who wrote a book called Fortunate Son about Bush. The drugs, the special treatment, missed health exam. It was all there. Publisher pulled the Book after it was found out that Hatfield was convicted for attempted murder and had served time in prison. Good stuff if you google on this Hatfield guy. Supposedly Bush was wild, impregnating women, breaking chandeliers, getting caught with drugs and put in jail..... etc. but Hatfield had no sources ON THE RECORD. Kitty Kelly lifted most of the first part of her book from here and Dan and Mary lifted ALL of their stuff from this book. Hatfield is dead or he probably forged the memos.
