Right - so on balance we're worse off because the expense of the "Expensive items" has gone through the roof, while the "cheap" items have gotten a little cheaper.

Precisely. And don't forget about the cost of higher education then vs now.

Yeah, I've been watching that trend among liberals to prop it up for the union vote. Dems have been investing for years in buying the unions. Gov. Kernan here in Indiana is pushing to fund "all day kindergarten" in this state when we're badly in debt, 21st in the country in job growth while still losing manufacturing and service sector jobs to outsourcing. They just finished screwing the state on property taxes and costing people in this state their homes because they couldn't afford the re-application of property taxes. Between taxation from the Dimocrats and Republicans playing Robin hood with our jobs, I'm wondering if anyone's minding the store in my state. Instead of trying to put nails in the lid before the patient is dead, the jackasses should be trying to save the patient. And Mitch Daniels isn't helping matters any by running for governor and telling this state how good it is to compete with slave wages. Kernan wallups him on that issue, Danials whallups kernan on most everything else. And the libertariand makes Daniels look like a democrat.
