I remember a thread from a few years ago where the hypothesis of one story was that the political war being fought "beneath the surface" was essentially the CIA vs. the DIA (Defense Intelligence Agency). According to the story, it was the DIA which had most of the liberal Democrat, State Depatment neo-communist types.

The article maintained that the DIA had become a Clintonite operation and the CIA was on the Bush side. Considering that GHW Bush was a former director of the CIA, it would make sense to figure he placed some help in there.

Do you have a link for that thread (or the story itself, if it was never posted)?
I'll bump it a hundred times.

Right, bureaucracies DO have their internal agendas. In fact, there typically are two or more opposing factions & clearly the CIA has a lefty-technocrat civil servant faction (e.g., Wilson & Plame) actively working against traditional American interests.

The Department of State, on the other hand, seems to have only a small and dwindling faction actively working FOR traditional American interests!

Your point is well-stated and true regarding the red-faced barons buried deep in the halls of state/cia/etc. But today they have no effect politically, meaning they are really powerless. Like the Gipper, it just doesn't stick to W. Eventually, may the old bureaucrats all "take the package" and retire.

Thanks for those links.
Unbelievably disgusting information in that article by Gertz.
