As Burkett explains in "Stolen Valor," Rather "was discharged less than four months later on May 11, 1954 for being medically unfit.” As a boy, Rather had suffered from rheumatic fever.
I imagine there are 1,000s of letters like this being sent to cBS and/or their affialiates.

Soulard, if you are a rated pilot, you know that flying a military jet stateside could well be more hazardous to your health than four months in the Mekong Delta on a swift boat. Having logged over 2,000 hours pilot time during World War II, although never in a jet, I can speak from some experience.
