Ad Renews Charges of Bush-Saudi Ties (Fox Not Going To Run Latest Swift Vet Ad)

Ad Renews Charges of Bush-Saudi Ties

By Howard Kurtz Friday, September 24, 2004; Page A07

Charges of excessive coziness between the Bush family and the Saudis, last seen in theaters during "Fahrenheit 9/11," have made it to the small screen.

Two new ads from the Media Fund, a liberal advocacy group, question whether the president's family and the "wealthy," "powerful" and "corrupt" royal family in Riyadh are "too close for comfort."

Admaker Steve McMahon says the effort is to tie Bush to a country that has some religious schools teaching anti-Americanism and is at least partly responsible for $2-a-gallon gasoline.

"This is an attack line from Michael Moore's movie and shows how fundamentally out of the mainstream John Kerry and the party he leads have become," said Bush campaign spokesman Steve Schmidt, dismissing what he called "fictitious conspiracy theories."

One ad says Bush blocked release of part of a congressional report on the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks -- "28 pages of evidence that the Saudi government funded the terrorists who killed nearly 3,000 Americans. . . . Was it to protect his Saudi friends?" Numerous lawmakers protested the decision, which the White House said was to protect national security secrets.

The ad also invokes a former secretary of state: "Or was Bush helping Jim Baker -- a top adviser whose law firm is defending the Saudis in a lawsuit against the victims' families?" The second ad notes that "the Saudis have invested tens of millions of dollars in Bush business ventures."

Fox News rejected the ad as having "no actual evidence," Vice President Dianne Brandi said. She also turned down the latest spot from Swift Boat Veterans for Truth because it "accuses Kerry of treason, a crime punishable by death."

Vice President Dianne Brandi said. She also turned down the latest spot from Swift Boat Veterans for Truth because it "accuses Kerry of treason, a crime punishable by death."

It said "betrayed" not "treason" Dianne needs to get her facts straight, dumb chick.

That is no different than what Gore and Kennedy said about Pres. Bush. I think FNC is out of line on this one.

The SBV ad only tells the truth and Kerry did commit treason. I don't see what the problem is. "We all need to write to Fox.

I smell O'Reilly's influence on this matter.

He has been and continues to be against anything the swifties do.

If the treason story about the FOX refusal gets some play, it will do the job without even running the ad.

Perhaps I am just paranoid but it seems that lately Fox has been allowing the democrat, in their debates with a Republican strategist and a democrat strategist, to have the first and the last word, and most of the air time. Has anyone else noticed this or am I just being paranoid?

You're not paranoid. That is exactly what they have been doing.

I have loved FOX, or at least most of it, but lately I have had far too many moments wherein I am disgusted with them.

Am I missing something here? Since when do the Saudis get a free pass at election season? Why are the words powerful and corrupt put in quotes? Does this writer think that the only thing wrong with Saudi Arabia is that "some religious schools" are anti-American? How about a crazy country that's essentially one massive prison (for women, especially), where anti-Americanism is a way of life, and from which money for terrorism worldwide flows like water?

Let's especially not forget the US citizen daughters and wives of Saudi men who are *imprisoned* in that country, and whom our State Department adamantly refuses to rescue. Maybe they'd like to actually come home and vote this election season, but no such luck.

Funny - just about everything unfavorable I read about Saudi Arabia after 9/11/01 came from the *conservative* press and much of it right here on FR. On that note, is David Horowitz of Front Page Magazine a "traitor?" Islamic anti-wahhabi, anti-Saudi writer Stephen Schwartz? Most of National Review Online?

I'm going to vote for Bush, but I will never cut the Saudis one bit of slack as long as they're the biggest Islamofascists on the face of the planet. I think we invaded the wrong country; the Magick Kingdom is NOT "our friend," and when the GOP sups with that particular devil they'd best use a long, long spoon.
