Gallup questions reveal CBS fallout (48% say too media too liberal, 55% say no or little confidence)

The CBS fontgate/memogate/Rathergate scandal has produced an uptick in feelings of liberal bias in the media, while trust in the press has fallen to an all-time low. According to new numbers (Subscription Required) from the Gallup organization, which has been tracking the question of media bias for many years, the issues of media bias and trust showed significant shifts during the time CBS was under scrutiny, September 13-15.

For the first time since Gallup began this research over 30 years ago, more than half the people (55%) answered "not very much" or "none at all," when asked about trust in reporting the news.

In general, do you think the news media is -- [ROTATED: too liberal, just about right, or too conservative]?

% Too

% Just

% Too

% No

2004 Sep 13-15 48 33 15 4

2003 Feb 17-19 45 36 15 4
2002 Sep 5-8 47 37 13 3
2001 Sep 7-10 45 40 11 4

In general, how much trust and confidence do you have in the mass media -- such as newspapers, T.V. and radio -- when it comes to reporting the news fully, accurately, and fairly -- a great deal, a fair amount, not very much, or none at all?

% Great

% Fair
amount
% Not very

% None
at all
% No opinion

1972 May 18 50 24 6 2

This is the first real evidence that what happened to CBS has had an effect on everybody in the press. These shifts are significant and cannot be ignored.

I'm more bothered by the 'too conservative' number going up, apparently showing that the Dem disinformation campaign is getting some takers.

That is why I always like being told by the media that they are not liberal. My neighbor certainly won't say it! LOL!

Maybe more liberals think the press is too conservative because more of the liberal press is covering the CBS scandal.

It's shameful those numbers aren't 70+higher! Looks like our country has been diagnosed with a rare case of SLOTHFUL syndrome!

Hello,

I truly can not remember when I have so much fun! We have had to live for decades under the oppressive rule of the Old Media, and they are being torn to shreds before our very eyes.

Glad to be here, would not miss this train wreck for the world, MOgirl

Wow, this is the death of MSM! It is not just CBS. No wonder ABC, NBC, the NYT, the LA Times, the Chicago Times, the Washington Post, USA Today, et. al. are all pissed and writing exposees on Dan Rather and CBS. CBS is taking them all down!

This almost is worthy of replacing my new tag line that I just modified today. I saw earlier today that Dan Rather spoke at a major gathering of newscasters this summer and warned the other journalists about the importance of not rushing a story to press and the need to carefully check facts and documents prior to airing a story. Such irony.

A more interesting poll would be to correlate it by party affiliation. I bet that 90% of Republicans say they are too liberal, and 90% of Democrats say they are not.

That would, of course, be proof that they are partisan.

This data must be wrong. I cannot tell you how many current and former network executives I have heard in the past week explain how this whole biased media business is just so much Fox News propaganda.

Could they be wrong?

I am not sure what your point is. Public thinks media is liberal (except Fox and few others) and biased. Network execs think they are fair and balanced. There is a disconnect.

If you're going to use that tagline, you should know that the corrrect expression is "hoist with his own petard". Hoist is the past tense of hoise, and a petard is an explosive device used to blow in the gates of walled cities, not something that is used to hoise or raise up someone. It was set off with a simple fuse, and if the sapper who was setting it was not careful it might go off early, causing him to be blown up or "hoist" at the same time with the bomb. The expression, as used, comes from William Shakespeare--"For 'tis the sport to have the enginer / Hoist with his owne petar" -- Shakespeare, Hamlet III iv.

The media must dismiss this poll out of hand. It shows liberal bias for many years running.
