Look at Russia for your answer.

"Freedom and self-worth will soon be our new allies emerging within the Middle East that help our soldiers on the ground."

That presumes societies capable of recognising the value, of "freedom and self-worth" and being willing to endure paying the price to obtain same.

My barometer regarding islam and the arab "cultures" winds up pointing to a big question mark, about this situation.

Clearly Japanese and Germans had societal underpinnings (cultural, economic, religious, etc.) which were the basis for acceptance of democratic, peaceful self-rule.

Islam spawns so much violence and terror, against their own and others, that I'm not overly optimistic.

Are we, the US, willing to spend tens of thousands of lives and billions of wealth? Will we become weary after five or ten years of this process?

We did in Vietnam.

Oh come on, Al Queda could have columns of tanks rolling across the border and Washington's response would be to set up water stations and voter registration booths.

Can you refer us to any good reports on this which makes the systematic, deliberate and, especially, unconventional tangible.

In other words, put the real life examples that illustrate your point out there specifically

Good News from Iraq Part 7

Good News from Iraq Part 8

Good News from Iraq Part 9

Good News from Iraq Part 10

You can find "parts 1 through 6" on that Aussie blog site as well. Bon Appetit.

Massood was quite influential--how important (compared to him) were the clerics killed today?

Massoud was George Washington to the NA. There is nothing close to him in Iraq today. Had Massoud lived the Afghan situation would probably be far more stable than it is today.

Adnan Shukrijumah, who is being sought by the FBI for the past several years.
One official said Shukrijumah recently was seen in Mexico and earlier had been in Canada near a university with a nuclear reactor, leading to concerns that he was seeking radioactive material for a radiological bomb.
The Mexican newspaper Proceso, quoting Mexican officials, reported earlier this month that Shukrijumah was being sought in northeastern Mexico after being tracked to Sonora in August.

I am surprised they did not say through the Superbowl. I know that there have been local reports of probing of security and bridges by caucasian muslims here in Jax.

Good posts, both.

I see that the MSM is in unison on declaring the war a failure. Last nite all three channels lead with "chaos in Iraq", "American beheaded", and "Kerry challenges Bush on war".

The ultimate success or failure of this quasi-state of warfare we're engaged in won't be known until the war is over. I think that IF al Qaeda succeeds in pulling off some kind of horrible WMD attack on American soil, then we should at least be willing to admit that our quasi-warfare strategy has failed and cannot protect America.

I don't agree with the premise of your comments. The simple fact is we are winning and we don't need a passage of more time to make that clear.

The fact is we have most certainly prevented a number of planned attacks since 9-11-01.

We are systematically killing / dismantling Al Qeade operations World-wide.

We have removed Saddam from Power in Iraq. No one being intellectually can deny the World is safer because of this. Freedom and the value of self-worth are coming to the people of Iraq. Both of these traits will be powerful allies to American soldiers in the Middle East for the years to come.

And lastly I would say that if Al Qeade or another terrorist organization was to succeed in hitting America again - That does not in any way mean we are losing! (what a defeatist type mindset) -

It simply means we are fighting a very ruthless and determined enemy (which we are!) - It means that we have to "get it right" 100% of the time.....while they only need to get in right "once" -

The odds are in their favor - understand this -

That is why we need to continue on the offensive, continue to use unconventional means and forces, continue to press for freedom.

The G.W. Bush strategy is the correct strategy. The world is being made safer because of it.

Does that mean we will all come out on the winning side of every event? - Of course not! - This is the real world.

Though while we may lose an event here or there, we most certainly will win this war....and we are clearly winning it now.

Oh, got it now, I ran it through an Ebonics translator and got: "I wonder if this story is true? Can you imagine? If this happens everyone knows Bush will probably serve another four years in the White House."

LOL - let me guess - publik skool?

Sounds like the same kind of attitude a lot of high-level government Poohbahs had when some FBI agent in the midwest was putting out warnings about oddly-behaving Muslims in flight simulators.

That is the predominant issue in the election... All of us know how 9/11 affected America in all aspects economically, socially, and politically. If terrorism isn't head off at the pass, and stopped pro-actively, nothing else matters, because we'll all be dead or otherwise... GWB has been consistent on this issue, there's no doubt about that.

I don't agree with the premise of your comments. The simple fact is we are winning and we don't need a passage of more time to make that clear.
But I didn't imply that it did. I said the ultimate success or failure won't be known until the war is over. I did not say we were losing. In fact, I do think we are winning at the moment.

So I'm not sure what you're objecting to here. You say you don't agree with my premise. But there is no premise. The first sentence is a truism and the second is a conditional. There's a premise for the conditional statement, but not for the entire paragraph.

The fact is we have most certainly prevented a number of planned attacks since 9-11-01.
I don't deny that.
We are systematically killing / dismantling Al Qeade operations World-wide.
I don't deny that, either.
We have removed Saddam from Power in Iraq. No one being intellectually can deny the World is safer because of this. Freedom and the value of self-worth are coming to the people of Iraq. Both of these traits will be powerful allies to American soldiers in the Middle East for the years to come.
Don't deny that, either. Good luck in your argument with this strawman you're setting up.
And lastly I would say that if Al Qeade or another terrorist organization was to succeed in hitting America again - That does not in any way mean we are losing! (what a defeatist type mindset) -
Are you a fool? You've set up a strawman, and now you're calling him names. We had a homeless guy who used to live a few blocks away from us in the park. I used to watch him fighting with one of his imaginary demons. It was pretty funny, but it had nothing to do with me or my view of the world. And neither does anything in your argument.

What would happen if you dirty bombed a refinery area? How would the companies shut down the equipment in time to avert discharge of dangerous chemicals? Seems impossible to have enough radioactive suits for personnel to get in there and shut it down. And there would be reluctance for people to risk their lives I assume. Could it lead to a deadly chain reaction? Damn, I think I just scared myself.
