The reason I'm posting this is to clarify Rather's position as managing editor. We keep getting this thrown in our face that he's only just the anchor. Wrong. He does have final say in the stories aired on CBS news, like memogate.

This is an FYI alert for future reference. Try again libs.

Yep, he has the final yea or nay on a story. That's one of the reasons he shouldn't have gone to Texas this weekend to talk to Burkett.

I realize there's been a gazillion stories about this, so might have missed it, but has anyone in the MSM yet questioned the ethics and ramifications of his trip?

Your point is very well taken...this utter failure of journalistic competency lands completely in Rather's lap...he was blinded by his abject hatred of W and rushed to judgement...be not too quick to judge, lest ye be judged thyself...sorry Dan, gotcha!
I would not be surprised if by this time next year John Roberts is the new talking head at -BS and Rather is out to pasture like Cronkite and Rooney.

I lifted the following off the link you enclosed:

I did it to prove your point. The left seems inclined to dump embarrassing links when we find them out. (See my tagline. :)

I was getting ready to correct myself that there is an Editor-In-Chief over him, but I can't find one listed. The buck does indeed stop in Dan's lap.

I'm thinking the Texas trip was damage control. Something like "Burkett, this thing is getting ready to blow. I can't hold it together much longer. We've got to get our story straight, and do it fast. I'm going to go back with some footage, so it looks like I'm trying to find out how we got duped. Now, here is your part....."

Just a guess, but stranger things have happened. Heck, stranger things have happend this week!

Let the heads roll...

I'd bet the farm that CBS knew it was a forgery to begin with. They
just thought they'd get away with this fraud. They're still thinking
like it is 1992. That's when they covered for Bubba's bimbo-erruptions,
the sad conditions of Arkansas, cattle futures, and the family cocaine
convictions.

Back then, there was no Free Republic online. Rush was the only voice
in the wilderness, but the country hadn't started paying attention to
talk radio yet. In 1992, the only cable news outlet was CNN. So the
old coots at CBS just didn't realize anyone was watching them, that
technology caught up with them.

We are left to wonder how many documents forged, how many eye-witnesses
pressured, how many other witness viewpoints got quashed that just didn't
match up to the agenda. And how many legitimate experts were ignored in
the decades of the CBS, NBC, ABC, WashPost, NYTimes leftist revolution
before this modern pajamahajeen revolt?

The internet was started by the Department of Defense. This writer
was present in 1993 at an AFCEA conference where a three star general
explained how the net was given to public industry. He said that in
in the 1980s they discovered the internet just wouldn't work as a
reliable secure defense network that could withstand nuclear attack.

It would work for public communications, though, if that's the whole
story.

Satellite communications exploded at the same time. More than just
providing a transmission medium that allowed us to watch things behind
the iron curtain, so much proliferation of global transmission bandwidth
reduced the cost. That allowed one microphone in an AM radio studio to
be broadcast to millions of Americans.

Did the patriots in uniform realize how far our country had been sold
out to collectivist ideology rooted in the same 19th century philosophy
that gave birth to Marx and Engels, one that is utterly contrary to
the divine nature of individual rights identified in our Declaration
of Independence? Did they know in the Pentagon that the time had come
when we needed another media? Did an information monopoly represent
too much vulnerability to infiltration? Those are questions that will
be answered by historians.

Today, one thing is clear. Americans now watch broadcast network news
reports with the same cynical disbelief that became common for average
people behind the iron curtain when they saw ITAR-TASS. Sure they tell
us the weather, sports, and about the train crash; we pretty much believe
that. Yet nobody with any sense believes a word beyond it until we've
had a chance to check out the internet and tune into the local AM radio
talk hosts the next day.

An easy prediction was that CBS or one of the other networks would
be Jayson Blaired soon. Times or Post reporters and editors, along
with their broadcast news equivalents, live on the upper west side or
in Chevy Chase or in Georgetown condos. They've got no clue what's
going on in the rest of America. They don't get it. We may or may
not be wearing pajamas. But we are taking our country back. And
George W. Bush doesn't read their papers.

That's what I have wondered. Doesn't say much for an "impartial" news organization, does it? It's why I personally think Heyward is a fool for not removing Rather completely from the picture until the internal investigation is over.

You'd think stockholders would be calling for Heyward's head. I know I would.
