What Blogs Have Wrought (Buckhead)
Weekly Standard ^ | September 27, 2004 | Jonathan V. Last

IF YOU TRAWL the posting boards at FreeRepublic.com long enough, you'll go mad. Hundreds of voices are shouting, spitting, and clamoring for attention at any given moment. The night of Wednesday September 8 was no different. Following the 8 P.M. airing of CBS's 60 Minutes hit on President Bush's record in the Texas Air National Guard, Freepers were rattling their cages and pinging around the web in anger and disconsolation. On a thread begun in response to a New York Times article about the 60 Minutes story, "tomahawk" wrote, "The MSM [mainstream media] are whores for Kerry, whores for Democrats, and whores for Jihadists. Through their lies and distortions, our country's continued existence is now in doubt."

Amidst this clamor, the post by "Buckhead" could easily have gotten lost. At 11:59 P.M.

"In the same way the market sifts and analyzes information stocks better than any individual investor or institution ever could, the blogosphere weeds out the chaff." Thus, a lone helpful comment at FreeRepublic.com gets quickly elevated into the spotlight, while the multitude of cranky grumblings disappear down the memory hole."

Here's a telling statement from the article that implies we should be more careful about our rants and cranky rumblings, but maybe not...

I thought tomahawks comments were colorful and insightful.

Moreover, CBS has added considerable weight to tomahawks statement by their actions. :-)

"IF YOU TRAWL the posting boards at FreeRepublic.com long enough, you'll go mad. "Maybe they meant to say, "you'll grow mad."

What he(?) meant to say was: "If I continue to surf FR, I'll go mad"

Seeing so much truth all in one place at one time can be quite a shock for a journalist.

"Aside from technological advantages, there seems to be an ideological divide at work, too. The political blog world is arguably more conservative than liberal, though there is a sizable contingent of liberal blogs. But these liberal blogs function more like the old media than do their conservative Internet brethren. While blogs such as Power Line and Little Green Footballs and Instapundit were chasing the CBS story, interviewing experts, posting material as they found it--whether or not it supported the case against CBS--many of the liberal blogs went into entrenched-partisan mode."

That was my favorite paragraph in the article too. Zell Miller democrats are fleeing from their party in horror at the angry, America-hating lefties who have hijacked it. What's left of the DNC is becoming irrelevant, and it's taking the old media and liberal websites with it.

I am hoping a couple of things happen here. I hope that Kerry will lose, and that perhaps a couple of big name Democrats also lose. And then, what will happen at the DNC? Will they finally come to grips that they have incompetent people in charge and that adults need to replace them? Or, hopefully, nothing will happen, leading them to even greater defeats.

I "TRAWL" here because this is the place to catch the biggest and the best off the back of my conservative boat.

However, I "write" replies or post articles. I have never ever "shout" (type can't be heard audibly).

I have never "spit" (my keyboard does not have the ability to produce spit) and Jim Rob would ban me for spitting on his forum floor.

I have never "clamored for attention" (how does one do that in this forum by the way?) Babies and toddlers do that when they're hungry or tired. No babies or toddlers here that I have met yet.

" . . . shouting, spitting, and clamoring . . . "

Now CBS is . . . spouting, $hitting, and clamming up.

I don't know Buckhead from Jack but if you mess with him you mess with me. The left in America is going down and I will see to it.

Don't mess with the best.

We have to let nonsense be posted, because in the end you dont know what is or is not nonsense. At the beginning there was skepticism of the 'these are forged' claims, by some cogent posters; their refutations had to be dealt with for the claim to stand up. Like a courtroom.

The blog intelligence and FR's greatness is about letting that nonsense survive, but having a feedback amplification mechanism, where the stuff that *is* true, gets lifted above the noice and fluff.

There should be a way to 'rate' threads and articles, so that the best stuff is able to peek above the crowd. Feedback mechanisms like that are good.

I just get tired of BS in the news. The reporter thought up the lead before getting the story and then got the quotes to fit the lead.
