FIRST LADY INTERRUPTED BY DEAD SOLDIER'S MOM
WINS News ^ | 9/16/04

Posted on 09/16/2004 11:44:50 AM PDT by areafiftyone

A Hopewell woman whose son was killed while serving in Iraq was arrested Thursday after she interrupted a campaign speech by first lady Laura Bush.

Sue Niederer had refused to leave the rally and demanded to know why her son was killed in Iraq. She was eventually escorted from the rally site, a local firehouse, by police.

Niederer wore a T-shirt that bore the words "President Bush You Killed My Son" and a picture of her son, Army 1st Lt. Seth Dvorin.

Dvorin was killed in February while trying to disarm a bomb in Iraq. The 24-year-old had just returned to Iraq after spending two weeks with his family.

The first lady continued speaking after the arrest, touting her husband's record on the economy, health care and the war on terror.

More than 700 people attended the rally in the suburban community of 90,000 near Trenton. Hamilton is home to a large number of state employees. It has traditionally been a swing municipality in local, state and national elections.

Republicans are encouraged that recent polls have indicated an erosion of John Kerry's earlier lead in New Jersey.

A Star-Ledger/Eagleton-Rutgers Poll last week had Kerry at 43 percent to Bush's 39 percent, erasing a double-digit lead once held by the Democratic challenger.

Mrs. Bush made several references to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks during her speech Thursday. She said that many in New Jersey, including some in neighborhoods near the firehouse, lost family members that day.

"Too many people here had a loved one that went to work in New York that day," Bush said. "It's for our country, it's for our children, our grandchildren that we do the hard work of confronting terror."

Saying that more families have two parents working, she said President Bush will support initiatives allowing for flexible work time and to give increased flexibility in health care coverage.

"We know that families face new challenges and that government should respond to these changing times," said Mrs. Bush.

do a google search on the lady. In a number of interviews {none interrupted by her grieving} she says Bush has a personal vendetta war, she says her son's unit wasn't prepared, swears the govt wouldn't let her into dover to see his body {betcha she had a camera}. Many many interviews and complaints that the army is lying to her, and so on.

In short, she has a peculiar grief that seems to manifest itself by wearing tee shirts, yelling at public meetings, giving non stop interviews, going to marches. I don't know. Somehow I imagine grief as a more weeping, crying, holding onto loved ones.

Condolences for the fallen soldier. Head-scratching for his mother. To wit, what exactly did you think your son was going to be doing when you let him volunteer for the military?

She cannot bear her grief, so she wants to blame Bush. Very easy psychology at work here.

I don't doubt any of that! My comments were directed to finalapproach29er for his sexist crack about women being "especially selfish." I just love generalized smears against a entire group of people based on the actions of one .

but I find the timing suspicious...

Eh?

The first lady was near her hometown campaigning on that day. Therefore, she decided to protest on that day.

The best time to protest is when the media is surrounding a public figure.

Question her politics if you like, but the timing was hardly "suspicious".

If you wanted to protest against Kerry, doing so when Theresa cam to stump in your hometown wouldn't be "suspicious". To the contrary, it would make perfect sense.

Did people harangue Mary Todd Lincoln, demanding to know why their son died at Antietam?

Good point, but I don't think the Lincolns had a son in the war. Their sons died from fevers.

Um, read that again. I think the poster meant the "haranguers" son, not the Lincoln's son. Maybe not written well. Should have said: did mother's/father's harangue Mary Todd Lincoln, demanding to know why their son died at Antietam?

If the woman became abusive toward security officers or the police, then she's on her own. If she made some unfortunate comments in front of an officer impacting on Bush's safety, they may have had no choice but to detain her. We probably don't know the whole story.

Well, first they tried the legless vet in a wheel chair, now some woman selling her son's sacrificed for politics. What next, a starving nun without health care?

I think grieving is fine, but making a tee shirt that says the president killed her son and going to the firehouse crosses the line from grieving into political action. She believes she has the moral right because she lost the son but she is using her son as a political football. Do you really believe she was voting for president Bush in January before her son died? (This smacks of Nick Berg's dad).

One other thought, as a member of the 16th generation of an American Military family who has had a member in every war since the French and Indian War, I have to say the reason I am here is that we discovered early that Staff Corps, Medicine, Electronics, Mechanics and Logistics are relatively safe places to contribute without getting your head blown off.

Perhaps I wouldn't be here if my grandfathers thought working up close and personal with explosives was the best job for them. Of course, I do not blame the president for my good fortune or my ancestors' ability not to get their heads blown off. Perhaps I should. But I have always believed that a soldier who picks that line of work knows the risk before he introduces himself to a particular piece of ordinance.

Just a thought.

Her only apparent motivation is to squeeze as much of her fifteen minutes of fame as possible from being the leftist mother of a fallen American hero.

I agree totally. I should have said "angry PRIVATELY." Anyone who makes a public show of it is beneath contempt. 100%.

"More than 700 people attended the rally in the suburban community "

There were 1217 there---that was the number they gave us for the number of tickets they collected and counted.
The woman was a bit disruptive, towards the end of Laura's speech--but every time she started to yell (before they removed her) everyone started to shout: "four more years, four more years." We drowned her out.

Laura was quite controlled and cool and didn't let the woman upset her. She didn't know what the woman was yelling, so she was able to continue her speech.

By the way, she was wonderful and it was so nice to see her in New Jersey.
She joked that her dog, Barney, was born in NJ.

I'm sorry for her loss but only an idiot does not know that being a soldier is a high risk occupation. She dishonors her son with her behavior.

Hi Laura
The other Laura was wonderful--she just has such a calm demeanor and I can see how she must be a wonderful help-mate to the President. How she raised those twins is something else---they must have given her a run for her money!!!!!

And it's fun to be in a crowd of Republicans---they always behave so well. :) There were a handful of protesters outside--maybe half a dozen kids--they were yelling at the people as we were leaving the firehouse and going to our cars. Almost everyone who walked past them, just looked at them, laughed and walked on. No confrontations from us. Those protesters really have to get a life!!!!

I hope the President decides to come back to Mercer County again. He was here shortly after his election.

Hi to BR

Her radical protesting dishonors what her son did. He died trying to keep the evil enemy from killing her and the rest of his family (not to mention the rest of us and maintaining the safety of our nation). She ought to be proud of him and thanking God that Bush is strong enough to be firm in his vow to do his best to keep Americans safe.

Somehow I fear she doesn't talk to God a whole lot; if she did, I'm sure she'd find more comforting ways of coping with her loss.
