There have been a number of posts lately regarding the Free Muslims Coalition at http://www.freemuslims.org
I posted a little blurb for them on my own site at tryontheglasses.com after seeing their press release that was sent out and posted on a lot of blogs.
At the time I wondered about who ran it and financed it, that sort of thing.
Anyway, ran across the article released above, and although I assume from the tone that it's not the most trustworthy of sources, the whois info is as they say and it raises some questions in my mind as to if this is really a grassroots muslim thing.
It feels less legitimate now and I wanted to ask again if anyone could comment on this group or speak to who's really doing this and what their motivations are.
Everyone has been waiting for 'Muslims' in general to speak out against terrorist tactics, but if this is really a campaign organized thing it sorta takes the shine off it.

James Huber was "outed" as a "Republican operative" by some leftwing canadian website:

After a WHOIS search, we discover that the FreeMuslims domain is not registered to an Iranian mullah or somebody with a Muslim surname but instead to one Jim Huber, the founder of Huberspace, a web development company specializing in law firms, conservative campaigns and organizations, according to Huberspace.net. Before starting his firm, Jim honed his skills in political web development at Washington Webworks, LLC, where he designed sites for political campaigns and political organizations. A sample of clients include Elizabeth Dole for President, George Allen for Senate, Demaris Miller for Congress, Jay Katzen for Lieutenant Governor (Virginia), and the Republican National Committee.

Disclaimer: I just copied the crap, I do not vouch for its accuracy.

How about a site entitled "DeportMuslims.Com"?

Wouldn't that be "fair and balanced"?

Scratch & Sniff: Kamal Nawash & Free Muslims front for GOP
by Shaula Evans

The other red meat for the conservative blogosphere (and, unfortunately, a number of moderate muslim blogs) right now is Kamal Nawash and the Free Muslim Coalition Against Terroristm. Last week, Nawash released a grovelling "apology for 9-11" that places the blame for 9/11 (and world terrorism) squarely where Nawash's neo-con bedfellows want you to believe it belongs: on the shoulders of the world Muslim community.

Welcome to the latest, hottest GOP astrotuf campaign.

The president and founder of Free Muslims, Kamal Nawash, ran an unsuccessful senate campaign as a Republican candidate in Virginia last year against Virginia Senate Democratic Caucus Chair Mary Margaret Whipple. He also ran unsuccessfully in 2001 for the Virginia house of Delegates against Virginia House Democratic Caucus Chair Brian Moran. In 2001 Nawash raised $57,057 and in 2003 he raised $180,339: Nawash 2001 donor list and 2003 donor list.

This *may* be on the up and up...but from inside Virginia politics, it looks an awful lot like a move to promote Nawash's political career and yet another a Republican attempt to put up thinly-veiled front group of token minority spokespeople to hijack a community's authentic voice:

1. Fronted by a Republican, Kamal Nawash.

2. According to the site, Nawash is a "regular guest on Fox News Channel," including Bill O'Reilly's show. As the documentary Outfoxed demonstrated, Ruper Murdoch's media channels, including Fox, are notorious for inviting GOP-invented "spokespeople" like Nawash. The group has also been highlighted by the Drudge Report.

3. The purpose of the website seems to be to encourage Muslims to spy on their neighbors, and loudly, publically, and simplistically pin the blame for any and all acts of terrorism singly and solely on Muslims.

4. According to Ismail Royer, boardmember Ali Al-Ahmed is part of a neocon campaign to smear the Saudi government and Saudi-based Islamic groups. (Er...I can't say I've really noticed the neocons jumping *out* of bed with the Saudis. Royer has his own checkered past, and I haven't been able to verify the allegations against Al Ahmed or the Saudi Institute, but I'm including FYI).

Caroline Glick, July 11, 2003, Jerusalem Post wrote an article, "Meaningless Half-Steps" about this guy Nassef, (Nassef takes half step away from jihad.

I saw this guy on Linda Vester's show, Dayside. I have a number of problems with him. He speaks very eloquently, but after logging onto his website, I note he has attended Islamic Society of North America conventions, he has a problem with the U.S. foreign policy in the Mideast, (now where have I heard that before?), has a problem with the Patriot Act...(criticizes Bush - is a Kerry supporter, but see what his criticisms are)....

Here is part of Glick's column from an earlier free republic poster named, yonif

Read Glick's entire article....Nassef is, shall we say, "problematic".

Nawash 'Talks the Talk'. The jury is still out on whether he 'Walks the Walk'. Right now, he's interested most in himself and his political career.
Daniel Pipes made some negative comments about him and his past associations, and it cost Nawash his last election attempt. Then 3 months ago, Pipes deleted his negative article on Nawash, from his Website, and essentially said that he may have been mistaken about Nawash, but that he's keeping an eye on him.
