RATHER'S OTHER IMPLODING 'SCOOP'
New York Post ^ | 9/15/04 | ERIC FETTMANN

September 15, 2004 --

The growing Memogate furor over the authenticity of doc uments said to cast doubts on George W. Bush's National Guard record isn't the only controversy dogging Dan Rather and CBS News these days.

The network is coming under fire in some quarters for a "CBS Evening News" broadcast about what it billed as a sensational national-security scandal that may have impacted critical U.S. policy decisions in the Middle East.

Less than a month later, however, the "sensation" has fallen far short of its original explosive billing. But that hype has provided potent ammunition for enemies of both Israel and the Bush administration's Mideast policies — ammunition that those forces are gleefully using.

By all accounts, what started off as a story about espionage at the highest levels of the Pentagon has turned into, at worst, a case of the possible misuse of classified documents — specifically, a single draft memo on U.S. policy on Iran that a Defense Department analyst may have shown to someone at the American-Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), who may then have passed the information on to Israeli officials.

[snip]

Suffice it to say, though, that this has less to do with national security than with partisan politics. As Michael Ledeen of the American Enterprise Institute, a friend of Franklin's, told The New York Sun: "When the FBI has a case against someone . . . they indict him and arrest him and put him away. They don't go to Lesley Stahl."

Which sort of begs the question, why does someone with poorly forged documents go to CBS?

Every "investigative story" put out by C-BS should be reopened and checked for accuracy, especially those that used "leaked insider documents".

We see now who inspired Goldberg on Bias and Arrogance. Dan Rather has perfected them to artform.

"This came right after Buchanan declared that U.S. support of Israel was the direct cause of 9/11 and all other forms of Islamic terrorism"

WTF is Buchanan's deal?

Clearly, much more is at work here, in terms of why the story was leaked now and who provided the information. By all accounts, it wasn't to pressure any of the supposed targets — both AIPAC and Franklin have been cooperating with investigators. Suffice it to say, though, that this has less to do with national security than with partisan politics

Well, here's the answer to that:

In Rathers' opening remarks: a spy for a major world power who may have been in a position to influence Bush administration policy — policy on Iran and Iraq."

Yet another chance to smear Bush.

Well now, wouldn't it be interesting if the forged memos were part of a plan to bring Rather down over his running this espionage story?

There's an old proverb that you can't scam an honest man. They shewed Rather the forged memos, and Rather wasn't able to resist them, even though he must have suspected they were forged. He wanted so badly to believe. << You can't scam an honest man. >>

Maybe it's not campaign antics at all.

It's just a theory....

By the way, remember Terrance Wilkinson?

I think Schieffer typed the documents, gave them to Rather and now that Rather will get the sack Schieffer can now take his place on the anchor throne after forty years of waiting for his turn.

There is no doubt that Israel is *capable* of bringing Dan Rather down...but the problem with your theory is that Dan Rather would burn most "sources" to save his own hide.

Instead, Rather is taking the bullet on this one, so he is protecting someone that is dear to him for whatever reason (family, ideology, something).

I didn't mean Israel so much as some American(s) who his story might have brought under suspicion, either wrongly or rightly.

<< Instead, Rather is taking the bullet on this one, so he is protecting someone that is dear to him for whatever reason (family, ideology, something). >>

Undoubtedly true.

How-ever, it is also true that the forgery was so poorly carried out that it begs the question whether it was intended to be discovered. I don't know, may-be not, may-be the forger was just Incompetent with a Capital I. But, it is a good question.

Also, Dan Rather is the person who has been most negatively affected by this fiasco, which is why one must wonder if he might have been the target. Again, may-be not. I'm just musing here.

How to combine these facts? May-be somebody who wanted to get Rather passed the forged documents to Rather's daughter, trusting that she would pass them on to Dad and vouch for them herself, entangling him in the fraud inextricably.

Or may-be not, lol. Speculation only goes so far.
