A document expert retained by CBS News for the disputed "60 Minutes" story on President Bush's National Guard record said yesterday that she had warned the program that the memos involved "had problems" and that she had questioned "whether they were produced on a computer." Asked whether CBS had taken her concerns seriously, Linda James, a forensic document examiner in Texas, told The Washington Post: "Evidently not." Tuesday's Question: Confirmation hearings get underway today for Rep. Porter J. Goss (R-Fla.), a former CIA

CBS began to doubt Will because she started expanding her role and doing Google searches about Bush's whereabouts at the time

Evidently that was more research than the people at CBS did, otherwise they would have known that the supervisor had retired 18 months before the memo's date.

Here's the juiciest part, at the end:

"CBS began to doubt Will [one of the experts who expressed doubts about the memos] because she started expanding her role and doing Google searches about Bush's whereabouts at the time, said an executive who insisted on anonymity because the network did not want to go beyond the official statements."

Duh. She was searching for the truth, to see if the memos corresponded to actual historical events. Almost like a, a, a, a... reporter!!

Can't have that sort of thing around at CBS.

CBS has no defense. A pack of lying trial lawyers could not spin them out of the hole they have dug for themselves.

Heaven forbid someone doing some investigative journalism.

CBS could take the out offered by the secretary and admit the docs are fakes while standing by the basic premise of their story. However, once they admit their error, the pressure to reveal sources would hit the boiling point. It leaves Dan the News Man with a terrible choice (from a liberal's perspective). Salvage a wisp of his shattered credibility or deep six whoever gave him the docs. If Dan continues his denials in the face of the onslaught it pretty much confirms that his source is directly connected to Kerry.
