US loses credibility in Middle East peace efforts: Spanish PM

www.chinaview.cn 2004-09-10 09:39:12

TUNIS, Sept. 9 (Xinhuanet) -- Visiting Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero said Thursday that the United States has lost its credibility in the Middle East peace efforts and stressed the need to return full sovereignty to Iraq.

Zapatero made the remarks at a press conference at the end of atwo-day visit to Tunisia, which are currently holding the rotating presidency of the Arab League, saying "the US-led military intervention has proved totally negative."

"Those who committed this flagrant error are no longer entitledto carry out the peace process (in the Middle East)," he said, noting a greater role thus "falls to Europe, the United Nations and the Arab league."

The Spanish leader, while stressing the need to "return (full) sovereignty to the Iraqi people as soon as possible," said Spain's decision to withdraw from Iraq was a "very correct decision" for it conforms to the interests of the majority Spanish people.

He called on other countries which have troops in Iraq to follow Spain's example of withdrawal. He said, "If there were more decisions along the lines of the Spanish government's (decision of withdrawal), more favorable prospect would be opened up."

Zapatero, whose country is holding the current rotating presidency of the UN Security Council, also condemned the kidnappings in Iraq and called on the United Nations to take "urgent political steps."

Zapatero and his Spanish Socialist Party beat the Popular Partyled by former Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar in the general elections in March 14. The new government completed the withdrawal of its 1,300 soldiers from Iraq in May. Enditem

THE SPANISH NAVY HAS REQUESTED permission from the US government to purchase 60 of its Tomahawk missiles, currently only on sale to the UK. The Pentagon is studying the proposal.

This guy is basically a Spanish Communist who is trying to butter up the Arabs. It's sad to see Spain descend to such depths. But it's not much worse than America's having elected Clinton to office--not once but twice.

50 million freed Iraqis and Afghans might differ with you, Zappy.

So you stick with your surrender strategy and see where it gets you (pushed out of your own country, that's where).

Europe and the UN are doing a bang up job in Iran. Which, incidently will be handed over to the US as a military operation.

PS. Your brother is not funny.

The US is the only entity in the world that has any credibility left. Sadly.

"US loses credibility in Middle East peace efforts: Spanish PM"

WHO CARES what the Europeans think? The reason Kerry continues to slide so precipitously is that regular, everyday Americans, more and more, are starting to wake up and say "WHO CARES about Europe?" Europe is a dying continent (except perhaps for our good friends in Poland). Most of Europe is about 20 years away from becoming a Muslim satrapy -- and, defying all logic, they seem to be inviting this future with a stupefying naivete that boggles the imagination.

Although a lot of people (including me) disagree with a lot of Pat Buchanan's foreign policy ideas, one has to wonder if Pat's got the right idea: "seal off" the U.S. for a while, and let the rest of the world flounder their way for a period of chastisement.... I really do believe that we are living out some of the characterizations and mindsets that were depicted in Atlas Shrugged. And thankfully, the U.S. -- despite the problems on which we still need to work -- still seems to have a large (and growing) number of John Galts and Dagny Taggarts, willing to fight the good fight.

The US reply should be: You will find your 60 tomahawk missiles under the sand that we tell you to go pound.

I hope they conclude that they can save considerable shipping charges if they fly them direct to Madrid. Fully loaded with munitions.
