Suddenly, everyone's turning against us Baby Boomers
Richmond Times Dispatch ^ | 9/14/04 | RAY MCALLISTER

Whoa! What's happening?

Why are people turning on us?

We're the Baby Boomers, you know.

The Mighty Boomers.

We invented everything from money to music to sex, did we not? Nothing good ever happened until we came along.

Now people are turning on us.

We Baby Boomers are being made to feel . . . guilty.

Ridiculous, isn't it?

People have tried to make us feel guilty before. They said we consumed too much. Or we were too shallow. Or we only thought about ourselves.

Excuuuuse me.

Who should we think about? Somebody else?

All that was just jealousy. Even Tom Brokaw came along and said the World War II generation was "the greatest." Jealousy. Pure jealousy.

Sure, they saved the world.

Did they ever throw a party like Woodstock?

I don't know why most Gen X & Y would want to put boomers in homes. Considering the fact that boomers were the ones who originally advocated killing people who were inconvenient, I think there may be other plans in store.

I wish you would clarify yourself on your views about my generation.

I won't repeat your mistake of ascribing common thoughts & motives to a massive demographic identifiable strictly by date of birth. Its common knowlege in this day & age that gross stereotypes based upon where one lives, ones income, ethnic identity - and age - are as often as not inaccurate, appear rooted in ignorance & are to be avoided. Besides all that, they're boring.

BTW conservatives are supposed to take each person as an individual - the class warfare stuff & accountability for the sins of the father is the other side's gig.

You never heard Reagan refer to Americans as anything other than Americans, did you?

Boomers only wanted 1/2 a kid so they could spend all of their time and money on themselves, that's why they made birth control and abortion the law of the land. Now there aren't enough people to take care of them. Boo hoo.

Yea,yea, yea. I'm a boomer born in '58. I have four kids, my eldest voting for the first time for GWB. The rest share my husband's and my conservative views.

I am pro-life. Abortion became the law of the land when I was 15. I was too busy trying to figure out Watergate. Don't paint all of us with the same brush. All boomers are not as you portray them. Many of them are her at FR, duh!

You are letting the media re-write history if you think otherwise.

No actually boomer men did. Boomer-women, burned their bra's, took the pill, voted for pro-abortion candidates, neutured their men, and went to work leaving schools and television to raise their kids. If John Kerry wins in November it will be because boomer-women put him there. Not to sound like a misogynist, but those are the facts.

People who identify themselves based on a generational stereotype are losers.

Thank you, cyncooper. I don't think ever n my life have I introduced myself by saying , "Hi, I'm valleygal and I'm a baby-boomer." Heck, I didn't even know I was a baby boomer until I read the date break down for the generations here on FR in a thread.

I've always just thought of myself as a conservative Republican. BTW, my husband is self-employed so pays double FICA and I already realize we'll probably never see SS and we aren't crying about it.

For some reason you seem to think I am of the demographic between "'45 and 65" that you want to pick off one by one for even having the audacity to air their complaints about what they are facing as a result. Let me set you straight : I was born in 1967. I was adopted. I had Depression Era parents. I was raised conservative and I remain conservative, possibly more conservative than my parents; at least, a lot more actively so, as their attitude these days is that I make a big whoo0ha out of nothing...yet they are happy to inform me that I am stuck with what previous generations have saddled on my back. And you want to sit there and tell ME that I should consider your position to be 'above it all'? Nice cop-out to say that you dont ascribe to 'stereotypes'.

Shut the hell up if you dont think Im worth talking to and go bother someone else. God is tired of you and so am I.

"If John Kerry wins in November it will be because boomer-women put him there. "

And if he loses (which he will) it will be because boomer men voted against him.

Come on, guys, quit with the generational war. We should all be more or less on the same page, if we are part of this forum.

Thanks. Well, said.

Oh, please. I have four kids, three of them teenagers and I'm concerned about their futures, like many of us are. Make you feel better?

BG, how about you?

Education is not an entitlement either Bill.

And two wrongs don't make a right.

Government should not be in the retirement business, the education business or the student loan business. But they are.

And as a person who has not taken advantage of any of these programs I want my money back! Fat chance.

The real issue is that there is not going to be enough money in SS to cover all the boomers, will the Conservative Boomers vote to increase taxes?

I *know* that there are many, MANY conservative Boomers out there. (Many of them are right here.) My mom is one of them. We don't want you to *die* or live in poverty for the last years of your lives. I think many of my generation are in a panic. We can't see how we can take care of our parents, take care of our children and ensure our own futures all in one shot. Yet, that's what we'll have to do and we don't see a lot of Boomers really bothered by this situation or even a little concerned for us.

Gee, I'm 46 and I am dealing with everything you just said. Funny thing is, I haven't been blaming anybody for it. I spend too much time taking care of my kids. And sitting here in my pajamas, of course.

But don't expect my generation as a whole to respect your generation as a whole after being handed a multi-trillion dollar debt, a decadent moral system and collapsing culture, and a plague of broken homes and slaughtered infants. You had a fine party, running up a debt that you had no intention of paying back before passing it onto those of your heirs that you didn't slaughter in the womb, and you want our respect for that?

So...you're the only one still living through the debt, the moral system and culture of death. Gee, I've been fighting it all my adult life (the last 28 years) and now I find out it's my (our) fault.

Nope, I was 5 when Kennedy was shot. My mom was 23. She was devastated.

Me, too. I don't have time to read any more X-er whining, because this boomer is too busy working my butt off, raising my family, keeping house, cooking, doing laundry, homeschooling, volunteering and working outside the house 15 hours a week, while my self-employed husband works his butt off to support us. :)
