Suddenly, everyone's turning against us Baby Boomers
Richmond Times Dispatch ^ | 9/14/04 | RAY MCALLISTER

Whoa! What's happening?

Why are people turning on us?

We're the Baby Boomers, you know.

The Mighty Boomers.

We invented everything from money to music to sex, did we not? Nothing good ever happened until we came along.

Now people are turning on us.

We Baby Boomers are being made to feel . . . guilty.

Ridiculous, isn't it?

People have tried to make us feel guilty before. They said we consumed too much. Or we were too shallow. Or we only thought about ourselves.

Excuuuuse me.

Who should we think about? Somebody else?

All that was just jealousy. Even Tom Brokaw came along and said the World War II generation was "the greatest." Jealousy. Pure jealousy.

Sure, they saved the world.

Did they ever throw a party like Woodstock?

If they are going to have political clout, they are going to have to form a strong voting bloc to take on the seasoned citizens stranglehold on political power.

Your wrath is misdirected. The stranglehold on power comes from the Federal Bureaucracy and the liberal establishment not boomers.

Is that the typical reaction of most people on this ping list?

Sweet and innocent question, wanting an equally sweet answer....

Don't worry bout that Gramma...the SS check is in the mail.

heh heh heh

I'm gonna go out like Reagan. Ten years to eat and vegitate with someone waiting on my every need. Then by the time I croak I won't even know I'm in pain.

Um no. The problem is the Boombers fostered abortion and birth control so they could live selfishly and now there is not enough people left to take care of them. End of discussion.

Um no. The Boomers were TAUGHT that when they entered college. They were brainwashed by forces already in play. Can't blame them for that.

The Boomer Gen is a bimodal distribution. One part of it are not all that different from the previous couple generation, the remainder are freaks.

You know, reading all of these posts makes me so glad that my mom doesn't show any of these stereotypical boomer traits.

But then again, it wasn't a boomer but a member of the "greatest generation" whom my mom took to church one Sunday morning (my mom had a job taking care of the elderly). This woman took one look at my mom's car ('97 Ford Escort) and said in the nastiest voice possible, "This car is too small, don't you have anything bigger?".

(No, not on the pay that she's getting to take care of your pampered hind end, and even then, she likes that car and sees no value in replacing it as long as it continues to run).

Jeeze, I can see why that woman's children hired someone to deal with her, rather than doing it themselves. I'm sure their Sunday morning was free.

I was born in 1966 and I am a conservative for many reasons - one reason I became conservative is because I could not stand that type of New York City Upper West Side liberals who were a little older than me. So smug, so sexually liberated for the wrong reasons, so confused.
Well, baby boomers deserve the trouble they get!
You were the first American generation that hated your country - that spit on the efforts of your father's fighting in WW2 - you spit upon the lifestyle of plenty that gave you comfort and safety in the 1950s - and you helped betray your country in a stupor of drugs, sex, and a victory for communism in Vietnam. You have idolized Castro and the Sandanista - along with Annie Hall and woody Allen when Star Wars should've won the Oscar that year. For that alone I hate your generation. Finally you gave us Clinton and Gore and Tipper and now Kerry. you gave us bad music in the 70s and 80s and Woodstock became a parody of what you are . You became useful idiots for the Soviets - you allowed Phil Donahue to stay on the air. You became me me me in the 1970s and Yuppies in the 80s - you dumbed downed society and you dressed down the culture. You altered the English language with your Ms. and your PC verbal hysteria. You gave us AIDS. Your generation also unleashed the killing of the unborn and you gave us bad TV like Maud, Mash, Murphy Brown, and Thirtysomething. You are the face of Hillary and the greed and the powerhungry dysfunctional Godless selves you all are. You deserve what you get. You boomer people suck!

I think you misunderstand my message in its entirety when you focus on one part of it. If young people do not stand up for themselves, the selfish old people (I do not leave my own generation out of this) will see to it they never keep enough of their own money to approach the standard of living we have today.

The government nanny state persists because they listen to voters. And the people who vote in large numbers are the people who have to count on politicians to do things for them, rather than doing for themselves. Young people, if they are not similarly engaged, will be steamrolled. I see that as being as wrong as individuals kicking grandma to the curb.

"Seems to me Xers have a problem acquiring the appropriate target. Why not start your generational war over at DU?"

You sound like you would fit in well over there...accusing others of the very things you're doing is liberal SOP.

If the Boomers really wanted to help their children and grandchildren out they would stop calling SS a "right" and volunteer to help the situation.

Darlin, we don't have enough money left to "help the situation." As I said, we've paid and paid and paid. Many of us will never get to retire in the first place. If we don't have a "right" after paying in for 50 years, who does?

I have YET to hear from ANY Boomer that they're concerned about the future of their offspring.

Why not start by talking to the millions of parents who have their kids in private schools?

I'm paying college level tuitions for both of my kids since they were in grade school, all the while funding public education we'll never use. And I'm not planning on SSI, precisely because of the kinds of comments I'm seeing here.

I promised myself I wouldn't get sucked into this silly topic.

I tell my my mother, as much as I love her, Greatest Generation , that she is part of the problem.

Do you not understand that some day YOU will be part of the problem?

My mother lives with me; I'm trying to imagine myself going downstairs and telling her she's part of what's wrong with the government. I respect her too much to do that.

Do you all have NO sense of taking care of the generations and people, even your relatives, that have taken care of you?

It seems to me the only spoiled, shallow generation is the one that now doesn't want to do for us what we've always done for the rest....and we did it without whining.

I'm thinking that has to be sarcasm.

At if it wasn't...buzz off. As they say...you make your bed...you sleep in it.

You want to get mad, get mad at the politicians who couldn't keep their hands off our cash.

You mean the politicians that YOU put into office and kept there? (And "YOU" here is clearly in the plural, speaking to your generation as a whole.)

I will happily care for my parents, because they loved me and gave freely to me and raised me well. Other parents who raised their kids right will be taken care of. The rest of your generation can go hang. If the Boomers wanted to be taken care of, they shouldn't have raided their own SS fund while depending on it for retirement--and while also aborting half the Gen-Xers and Yers who would be providing the taxes for the future.

When Social Security began, there were 300 people working for every one collecting. Now that's down to 3-to-1. When the Boomers hit, it'll be 1-to-1. Sorry, but all of the good will in the world isn't going to keep that brick afloat.

Case in point: George W. Bush / Bill Clinton

The first generation to have the "American Dream" handed to them on a platter

Excuse me dear, but nothing was EVER handed to me on a platter. I've worked hard all my life and will probably never get to retire.

intolerancewillNOTbetolerated seems to apply here.
