N Korea says it blew up mountain

North Korea has given an explanation for the huge blast last Thursday which prompted speculation that it was a part of a nuclear test.

The country's foreign minister, Paek Nam Sun, said the blast was the deliberate demolition of a mountain as part of a hydro-electric project.

His remarks were in response to a call for information by the visiting UK Foreign Office minister, Bill Rammell.

North Korea had said absolutely nothing about the incident until now.

Between your comments lies the truth.

I hope we used his bunker for our demonstration project.

LoL.

It's exactly the type of explanation the Iranian regime would give. I think Jung-Il and mullahs have been hanging out together too much.

Re #65

Yeah, mullahs are spending too much time with Kim Jong-il. Maybe in time, they will also wear platform shoes and sport his bad hair, too.:)

Actually, Powell stated that it was non-nuclear yesterday or so... it is easy to ascertain absolutely with radiation measurements, and that will come out.

The power of that was apparently on the close order of a thousand tons of TNT which is certainly well within range of an ammo dump blowing up. (or if NK wanted to "calibrate" for a future nuclear test - but that's a bit silly in this day in age since that data is easily available already)

I have it on good authority that North Korea had established it's largest holding area for political dissidents on that mountain. Due to overcrowded conditions, they were just clearing out the camp to make way for new inmates.

Russia, US is my guess

The Russians may have a good reason for having something go boom in NK.

"The Russian official did not elaborate, leaving it unclear whether the alleged Korean terrorist hailed from North or South Korea, or was possibly a Korean-Russian. "

Hello, Mister Bin Laden?
-- (other the other end) Kim! Allah be praised!
Yes, I am calling about your missile order? I am told that there is a minor issue in production. Those responsible have been executed.
-- Excellent! Allah be praised!
We now expect delivery in two more years.
-- Allah be ... what?!

The latest North Korean blast happened very near known ammo dumps and a volatile missile plant.

Volatile Missile plant? What Volatile Missile plant! I don got to show you no volatile Missile plant...

Seriously, no quarry blast makes a mushroom cloud, as the explosives are buried before they go off. The goal is to break up rock, not make a crater. I would love to see some before and after sat pics to see what was there, once...
