Two great terms that are hopefully becoming common are "NON-NEGOTIABLE ISSUE" and "disqualifying issue"

From A Brief Catechism for Catholic Voters:
"A disqualifying issue is one which is of such gravity and importance that it allows for no political maneuvering. It is an issue that strikes at the heart of the human person and is non-negotiable. A disqualifying issue is one of such enormity that by itself renders a candidate for office unacceptable regardless of his position on other matters."

From Voter's Guide for Serious Catholics (An On-Line Guide):

The FIVE NON-NEGOTIABLE ISSUES are:
1. Abortion
2. Euthanasia
3. Fetal Stem Cell Research
4. Human Cloning
5. Homosexual "Marriage"

the apostate john kerry disqualifies himself on each of the 5.

As a pro-life voter, you need to know which candidates in your state are pro-life and which back abortion. You can find that information and much more at WeVoteProLife.com. I appreciate the efforts of these folks very much. Rule of thumb however, is if they're a Dim-o-rat, they are pro-choice. If they are a pubbie, 90% chance they are pro-life.

I agree that the Dem vs. GOP rule-of-thumb is a good one for life and other social issues. What I think is the most important thing, however, is to identify (beginning at the local level) politicians who not only "take the pro-life position," but who are comfortable with it.

This is part of what sunk Bush I in 1992 and Dole in 1996 -- they were officially pro-life, but I don't know anyone who thought that they had the same heart-felt commitment to life and the same level of comfort with being pro-life that Reagan and Bush II had. When Reagan and Bush II talked about life issues, they seemed like they were comfortable in their own skin. Bush I and Dole seemed like they were wearing someone else's ill-fitting suit.

Both Reagan and Bush II were also good at portraying the pro-life issues in positive terms, and there are some fervently pro-life politicians who are better at emphasizing the negative than the positive.

Bottom line: the grass-roots effort to encourage and promote good pro-life candidates is a never-ending one. The pro-choicers in the GOP do a great job of promoting their likeable people within the party, whereas we who support the pro-life mindset have all too often allowed the issue to become one of a "checklist" or "litmus test" mentality.

This is a mistake, because in unenthusiastic hands, the pro-life cause can certainly be a loser at the polls -- a lukewarm attitude fails to mobilize the base, and the official pro-life position keeps the other side from crossing over. Double loser.

Yes, we should in practice view being pro-life as a non-negotiable policy position, but the positive way to do it is to support enthusiastically pro-life candidates, and allow the rest of the party see how it benefits from the mobilization of social conservatives.

Pro-choice, on a national basis (although not in certain local and state-wide races), is also a loser for the GOP. We have to keep reminding people that a pro-choice (or lukewarm pro-life) candidate will have trouble winning at the national level because of the large numbers of people who are broadly conservative, but who are mobilized to get to the poll and to support enthusiastically a candidate only when there are clear stances on social issues.

Pro-lifers aren't alone in this. Ask Bush I how he did in 1992 with the people for whom not raising taxes was non-negotiable priority number one. They may not have voted for Clinton, or even Perot, but a lot of them certainly didn't vote for him.

Looks like the site only endorses incumbents.
