There are homes on Key West that are over 100 years old, and still standing despite all the hurricanes.

i'll bet that given a decent budget, I could create a Florida waterfront home that would withstand anything nature cares to throw at it.

Yup. You'd pay a premium for construction, but it wouldn't be all that hard to do. The problem is that risk management is distorted by the government largess extracted from the rest of us at gunpoint. Without it, you'd see a lot more housing that readily survive just about anything a storm can do. Personally, I'm sick of this type of big-government spending. The people need to sink or swim on their own. If they can't do it themeslves, they need to consider moving someplace less risky.

A wise person in my family said, while eating Duncan Hines chocolate frosting by spoon, that "Chocolate fixes everything."

Earthquakes in California are not unexpected. Hurricanes in Florida are not unexpected.

Of course not. But that's not what you responded to.

Here's what you responded to:

I have no objection to government help for the unexpected, hurricaines in California or earthquakes in Florida fall into that category.

A hurricane is not unexpected in Florida, but an earthquake IS. An earthquake is not unexpected in California, but a hurricane IS.

Due to this (understandable) confusion, I think you missed the point being made :) I could be wrong.

re: Private Insurance is voluntary, as are mortgages and cars.)))

LOL! Unless you want to drive or own a house...I suppose libertarians ride bicycles and live in caves?

I never had any trouble getting all the house insurance I neded in Houston without government help, because I avoided buying in one of the stupid spots. No one else would have any trouble if they stuck to places that didn't guarantee destruction of the property before the mortgage was paid off.

I believe car insurance should be voluntary, but the penalty for having an accident without it should be life at hard labor.

Agree with your points, but you've been here plenty long enough to pretty well figure that if Sowell was pulled, it was for one reason and one reason only: duplicate post. :)

You don't? You should if you're a conservative. Providing relief for acts of God or anything else (i.e fires, disasters, etc.) is not covered in the Constitution? Nor is a 'moral obligation' to provide for the elderly covered either. Of course I learned from our President it must be because he has stated that it is....

just more government waste

Well I guess you aren't in the "compassionate conservative" camp.

BTW thought you said you weren't coming back here anymore?

Are you studying at the John F'n Kerry school of FLIP FLOPS or what?

Now where did I put that ZOT machine?
