Oh ya, I can attest to one aspect in this article. I missed 6 months of UTA's (Unit Training Assemblies - a.k.a weekend drills) in my unit a couple of years ago. I got permission from my commander to do it. My supervisor was instructed to just carry my missed UTA's as excused absences. In the remainder of the fiscal year, I completed my annual training requirement and did enough make up drills to get my minimum required 50+ points.

I don't recall ever being accused of being AWOL.

I'm still serving actively in my unit today. To date there are no derogatory items in my records.
