It’s as if the Democrats had a premonition that the Vietnam Veterans would play an important role in their future. Their Convention’s revival of memories of Vietnam was a clarion call for the Veterans to perform one more heroic act of service. Although all Vietnam Veterans were slandered by the excesses of Vietnam protestors, they were particularly wounded by the betrayal of an officer, John Kerry, who participated in these anti-war protests in a self-serving effort to achieve political notoriety. The nature of betrayal is that its adverse effects are felt most severely by those who are the closest to the perpetrator. Those Veterans who so admirably served side by side with this betrayer were the Swift Vets.
The Swift Vets are determined to tell their story to America. After over 30 years, they are still scandalized by the echoes of that patrician patois from Kerry's infamous '71 Senate testimony. They are not war criminals. They are in fact the true war heroes. Recounting their Vietnam experience, misgivings have been raised about Kerry’s conduct both during and after the war. The voting public took their measure of both sides and considered the sincerity of the Swift Vets versus the self-aggrandizement of an evasive politician who appeared much less credible after his minions were caught in serial lies in their efforts to thwart the Swift Vets.
The Swift Vets will have one more unforeseen service that they will perform. It will be to allay the battered egos of a rejected Party. Those who reviled these veterans in the past will once again renew their animosity towards those who will be blamed for their defeat. Projection of blame is much easier than self examination. The Democrats will avoid the introspection of why their Party is represented by out of touch leftists like Kerry, Edwards, Clinton, Pelosi, Daschle, Soros, and Moore. They will not ask why their Party has become the Party of economic stagnation, military decline, and the status quo while the Republican Party has captured the high-ground and has become the Party of progress, growth, leadership, and reform. They will not question their inescapable servitude to what has become the pillars of the Democratic Party - special interests such as labor unions, trail lawyers, big government, and the abortion industry.
Instead, they will undertake dramatic adjustments, such as, not mentioning the word Vietnam in their 2008 Convention. They will claim to themselves and to all who are still listening that they did not lose the Election but that Republicans used "dirty tricks" and once again stole what is rightfully theirs. They will proceed along their disillusioned course by attempting to dilute the leftist bilge water of Hillary Clinton when, in 2008, they once more offer the unpalatable to an America growing increasingly disenchanted with their fare.
Well, they will seem to. Hillary will run as a centrist, "moderate" candidate not because she is any less radical than Kerry but because she's been keeping her trap shut. She doesn't have to fool a lot of people to succeed, and that isn't satire.
