(CNSNews.com) - Sen. John F. Kerry has earned a "Labor Day goose egg" from a Second Amendment group, for being a "first-class hypocrite."
The Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (CCRKBA) was responding to a Labor Day picnic in Racine, W. Va., at which Kerry received a rifle as a gift from the United Mine Workers of America.
The Associated Press circulated a photograph of the Democratic presidential candidate holding the rifle.
After receiving the rifle on Monday, Kerry was quoted as saying, "I thank you for the gift, but I can't take it to the debate with me" -- an apparent reference to his upcoming political debate with President George W. Bush.
John Michael Snyder, CCRKBA public affairs director, accused Kerry of pandering to pro-gun-rights voters by portraying himself as a gun owner and hunter, but also saying he would never consider shooting a deer with an AK-47.
"This does not wash with America's gun owners," Snyder said. "The Second Amendment isn't about duck hunting. It is about the right to keep and bear arms for defense of life and property. Some gun owners are doing that right now in Florida as they protect their property from looters in the wake of Hurricanes Charley and Frances," Snyder noted.
Snyder said Kerry, just like his fellow senator from Massachusetts, Edward Kennedy, "has been a reliable vote for the anti-gun special interests.
"Just this spring, he came back from the campaign hustings to vote for a measure by anti-gun Sens. Dianne Feinstein of California and Charles Schumer of New York to extend a ban on the manufacture and importation of certain semiautomatic firearms beyond next week's scheduled sunset date. He also voted for a measure that would have outlawed the private sale of firearms at gun shows unless the buyer agrees to a background check," Snyder said.
"Kerry's not fooling us," Snyder added. "His 100 percent ratings from the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, the anti-gun American Bar Association's Special Committee on Gun Violence, and the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence just add up to a big goose egg from CCRKBA."
As CNSNews.comreported, Sen. Kerry has adopted a new strategy when it comes to firearms. His desire to be viewed as a gun-toting Democrat has left the gun control lobby noticeably silent during the 2004 presidential campaign, relegated to the sidelines on an issue that played a significant role in the election four years ago.

Kerry's strategy was outlined last fall by the gun-control group Americans for Gun Safety, along with the Democratic Leadership Council and pollster Mark Penn, who advised Democrats to tone down their harsh rhetoric.
"Democratic candidates for president are taking the gun issue to the political center, rejecting the most far-reaching gun restrictions supported by former candidates Al Gore and Bill Bradley," a February press release from Americans for Gun Safety boasts.

Although Kerry's use of gun imagery in the campaign doesn't bother the Brady Campaign, pro-gun groups like the National Rifle Association have made much of Kerry's photo opportunities. The NRA's television ads aim to focus attention on Kerry's voting record instead.
"John Kerry's record speaks volumes about his views against the Second Amendment," said Kelly Hobbs, an NRA spokeswoman. "A John Kerry administration would be tantamount to a death sentence for Second Amendment rights."
The Brady Campaign's Ramsey didn't dispute Kerry's voting record. After all, Kerry has consistently received a 100 percent rating from the group. Kerry also took time out of his campaign in March to fly to Washington to vote in favor of extending the gun ban.

Four years after Al Gore alienated gun owners with his tough talk and anti-gun record, this year's Democrat presidential nominee has adopted a new strategy when it comes to firearms. John Kerry is using images to make his case to gun owners.

Senator Kerry: "There's a front-page story in today's Washington Post that says that Democrats are going to try to run away from the issue of gun safety.
"I don't think that we can get elected nationally if we are not prepared to stand up against powerful special interests and make it clear that, whether it's the NRA or any other special interest, we're prepared to stand for our principles.
"All across this country, we have too many people who die each year from guns. So let me make it plain: I am for the assault weapons ban. I'm for the Brady Bill. I'm for making sure we stand up for gun safety in this country. We cannot be a party that retreats in an effort to try to court votes and not save lives."
Kind of reminds me of the Dukakis/M-1 tank photo-op from 1988.

Kerry couldn't even carry the gun properly during that film in Vietnam. He looks as awkward with a gun as he does windsurfing.

But like all of our rights, gun rights come with responsibilities, and those rights allow for reasonable restrictions to keep guns out of the wrong hands. John Kerry strongly supports all of the federal gun laws on the books, and he would take steps to ensure that they are vigorously enforced, cracking down hard on the gun runners, corrupt dealers, straw buyers, and thieves that are putting guns into the hands of criminals in the first place. He will also close the gun show loophole, which is allowing criminals to get access to guns at gun shows without background checks, fix the background check system, which is in a serious state of disrepair, and require that all handguns be sold with a child safety lock. Voted NO on more penalties for gun & drug violations.
The Hatch amdt would increase mandatory penalties for the illegal transfer or use of firearms, fund additional drug case prosecutors, and require background check on purchasers at gun shows. [A YES vote supports stricter penalties].
[Note: it's not clear whether Kerry's objection was to increased gun-crime penalties or increased drug prosecutions.]
Voted NO on loosening license & background checks at gun shows.
Vote to table or kill a motion to require that all gun sales at gun shows be completed by federally licensed gun dealers. Also requires background checks to be completed on buyers and requires gun show promoters to register with the Treasury.
Voted NO on maintaining current law: guns sold without trigger locks.
Vote to table [kill] an amendment to make it unlawful for gun dealers to sell handguns without providing trigger locks. [I.e., Kerry voted to require trigger locks with all gun sales.]

Senator Kerry has cast 59 votes on firearms issues in his Senate career thus far and only 1 vote can be considered a vote for gun owners’ rights—the vote to allow airline pilots to carry firearms.
Kerry has voted against gun owners 55 times in the U. S. Senate. He has voted a number of times to ban semi-automatic firearms.
In fact, he is a co-sponsor of S.1431 (the bill to reauthorize the “assault weapons” ban) which would ban many semi-automatic shotguns, detachable-magazine semi-automatic rifles and many other presently lawful guns, characterizing all of them as “assault weapons.”
Senator Kerry has consistently voted with the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence and the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence.
Senator Kerry has voted to “regulate” gun shows by voting to allow authorities up to 3 days to conduct background checks on guns sold by private individuals, knowing full well that the requirement would severely curtail, if not destroy, gun shows which are typically two-day only weekend events.
In addition, Senator Kerry has voted for the imposition of waiting periods on gun purchases, including waiting periods of 14 days, 7 days and 5 days.
And, in spite of this abysmal voting record, the Washington Post reports that 42% of gun owners in the Bush-supporting “red states” believe that Kerry would be a less aggressive advocate for gun control.
In fact, Senator Kerry is more anti-Second Amendment than Al Gore ever was.

One of Senator Kerry’s votes shows his true hypocrisy on firearms issues.
In 1999, Senator Kerry voted against an amendment to the Juvenile Justice bill that called for increased mandatory minimum and maximum penalties for illegal transfer or use of a firearm.
Instead of supporting a bill that penalizes the criminals who unlawfully use firearms, Senator Kerry goes after the law-abiding gun buyers and sportsmen—not just once or twice, but at least 55 times. Senator Kerry needs to be unmasked for the fraud that he is on this key issue.
Cover and concealment is an appropriate device to be used against enemy soldiers but not against fellow citizens trying to intelligently exercise their right to vote.
Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence says renewing the ban on "assault weapons" will be its highest priority for the coming months.
Kerry's Position
In a press release, the group praised Sen. John Kerry for speaking "loud and clear on what America should be doing to reduce gun violence." On Tuesday, Kerry voted in favor of an amendment that would have extended the Clinton-era ban on "military-style assault weapons."
That amendment contributed to the defeat of a larger bill that would have protected gun makers from politically motivated lawsuits intended to drive them out of business.
Kerry will say anything to win.
It failed miserably.
Thank you for all that information. I am still trying to figure out how he got elected to anything after he sat in secret meetings with the N. Vietnamese in France! What is wrong with this world that we should have to worry about gun ownership, dog ownership, property rights or having crooks in the legislative bodies of our government!
There is some speculation that he might have had his records sealed because he got a pardon from someone important later on, to allow him to hold political office. Anyone seeing that would be political suicide.
Didn't fool me. Just another example of Kerry looking dorky. He manages to look dorky while doing many things.
