Russia gave us some help in the Afghan campaign. But they bitterly opposed the Iraqi campaign. They were right in there with the French.
If they want to be allies with us in the War on Terror, that's a big plus for all concerned. But an alliance is a two-way street. Russia has to stop sucking up to the Arabs at the expense of the United States.
They did lead off with a fallacy though...
It seems that Russia, not America, has become the main target of terrorists. After September 11, 2001 there have been almost no terrorist attacks in the US, whereas there have been countless in Russia.
America is still the main target. We've just stopped all of the attacks against us by fighting the WOT. We've stopped countless attacks I'm sure.
Better late than never! Jump on board.
It's too bad Chechnya is resorting to these tactics. I actually supported their gaining independence from Russia until they resorted to terrorism. Now Russia pretty much has to subdue the rebellion and continue its occupation, otherwise it would be sending a powerful message to the world about the effectiveness of terrorism.
..."...American investigators recently identified a source financing Chechen gangs in Chicago. As a result, they closed the Benevolence International Foundation, which had already transferred over $300,000 to militants in Chechnya."...
..."...There must no longer be Western "havens", where terrorists can rest, seek treatment, use all the benefits of civilisation and even find sympathetic sponsors."...
Maybe the US is a "Safe Haven", which could explain the lack of attacks here.
Nice column, but it would be nice if he'd call on the russian government to also condemn terrorist killings of children when they happen in Jerusalem and Tel-Aviv.
In this war, Moscow would like to see as sincere and unequivocal support from the West as the West has received from Russia since 9/11.
Russia was unequivocal in its support for Iraq, and what about Syrian resolutions? I'd like to see stronger cooperation from THEIR corner.
They noted we haven't had a major terror attack since 9-11, they refuse to accept the reason why. This isn't to say we won't be attacked again, but if we are they understand flames will be on their heels in quick fashion. Beyond that, they understand their havens to operate will be further shortened. That's the kicker. It is one thing to have individual terrorists taken out. Quite another to lose one friendly country after another for your playground.
Interesting column...
This writer seems to be forgetting about Iran.
Building nuclear reactors in Iran is aiding and abetting terrorist on an unimaginable scale.
Where are the Russian peace keepers in Iraq?
It is time for Putin to decide which side he's on.
Let's pray to God that these barbaric acts in Russia will wake up the world to the WOT. Has anyone seen if Kerry has had any comments on the slaughter in Beslan? Has this shmuck woken up yet?
did they really think the Islamofascist just hate the United states. Costly mistake.
Terror isn't limited to Russia and the USA. Israelis have been dealing with these types for many years, India has been divided up into Pakistan and Bangladesh because of Muslim terrorism on the Hindus. Two million people in the Sudan have been massacred from Muslims. Eventually everyone will be in their target --- it's our turns now.
I think Russia is starting to wake up. Earlier today I was talking to a friend of mine who lives in Russia - she has in the past been critical of Americans and President Bush in light of the War on Terror. Today, when I talked to her, it seemed like she is beginning to see the light a bit: she referred to the terrorists as b*st*rds and didn't seem to them to want them to be treated very nicely, to say the least. It's a start.
Russia and the US ultimately may not find better allies than eachother in this war. We are both major targets, and we both have the means to deal with the problem to some extent. The Russians will certainly get more support from us if they are willing to start giving us more support in return. A US-Russian alliance could be the terrorists' worst nightmare. I have a feeling that the Russians will not be lulled to sleep as has sadly been the case with many here in this country.
