New soft-money group to launch anti-Kerry ads
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | Sept. 3, 2004 | APARNA H. KUMAR

The conservative MoveOnForAmerica.org plans to blast battleground states with anti-John Kerry ads until Election Day.

"MoveOnForAmerica.org was created due to the Bush campaign's largely inept attack ads against Mr. Kerry," its site says.

He said his group has already raised $200,000 and aims to surpass $1 million by the election.

"We'll hopefully be successful like the Swift boat people," Marks said, referring to the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, a 527 organization whose ads have questioned Kerry's service in Vietnam.

From the website:

The second ad, which will be aired at a later date will feature the political alliance John Kerry has forged with Al Sharpton, focusing on Mr. Sharpton’s history, which was rarely mentioned during his 2004 run for president. Instead of the charismatic and witty Sharpton seen during his presidential bid, Americans will be educated about the real Al Sharpton, who recently blamed America for the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the Sharpton who called Adolph Hitler “a great man”; the Sharpton who urged college students to kill police officers; and the Sharpton leading the picketing of a white-owned store in Harlem [calling the Jewish owner a ‘white interloper”], resulting in the store being burned down by one of Sharpton’s followers, killing seven people. The ad will include footage of Sharpton in his own words, and Mr. Kerry’s hinting of Shartpon becoming part of a Kerry administration.

Later ads will feature John Kerry’s raising political funds from known leaders of the Cali drug cartel, as well as other unethical [and possibly criminal] behavior by Kerry regarding his finances when he was dead broke between his two marriages.

MoveOnForAmerica.Org is a group of citizens created by its president, DC-based GOP political consultant Stephen Marks. Specializing in opposition research and media, Mr. Marks has consulted dozens of candidates at all levels from presidential to congressional, including consulting for the National Republican Senatorial Committee, the National Republican Congressional Committee, and the Republican Governors Association. Mr. Marks has also been a press secretary in GOP campaigns [including Jeb Bush’s bid for governor in 1994], as well as an investigative journalist for such publications as Penthouse and New York Newsday. Mr. Marks also currently hosts The Stephen Marks Show heard weekly on KFNX Radio in Phoenix, and has appeared regularly on TV and radio, including The O’Reilly Factor, and Hannity & Colmes. Mr. Marks’ created TV ads in 2000 spotlighting Al Gore’s record, and now in 2004, Mr. Marks and MoveOnForAmerica.org. will do the same with John Kerry on a much larger scale.

Even if the commercials are true, I can do without this group, its mildly racist slant, and its founder's direct connection to the GOP. Wonderful fodder for the DNC to inflame African-Americans and, with the Pubbie connections, to smear the President.

I totally agree with you. The thing leading up to a Cali drug cartel sounds suspicious.

Yeah I agree nobody should give any money to this. Wasn't there an African American 527 about to start running pro-Bush ads? That's a better investment.

"will air this first ad starting Tuesday Sept. 7th in the Washington D.C. market"

Extremely suspicious. The Washington D.C. market is soldly Democratic and only holds 3 electoral votes. The only reasons to run political ads there are to build clout as a lobbyist or to slime someone in a particularly underhanded manner.

The backer of this new "conservative" group, Stephen Marks, is a former writer for Penthouse, too...

OK, I just really noticed the "inept" remark, and that DEFINITELY sounds suspicious.

What do you mean "racist slant"?

Should scoundrels be beyond criticism, just because they are black?

He isn't criticising Sharpton because he is black, he is criticising him for his stand on issues and actions.

ANY ad that tells the truth about Kerry will be HIT by the media and the dems as "negative"...My advise is USE KERRY'S own words...they will still label them negative, but with his own words, the public will ignore their rants about going negative.

A bit over the top I'd say. Seems like it could do more harm than good.

Although I must admit I am baffled why Democrats embrace Sharpton after all of the sleazy stunts he's pulled in new york.

May I offer a suggestion? If they could get some film or good stills of Kerry's picture hanging in the Commie war museum and emphasize how Kerry's actions "helped prolong and eventually win the war" for the communists. The quote, by the way, is from the bio of the Communist North Vietnamese General Giap, who was chief of their armed services.

One of the founders of this group, AFAIK, is Melanie Morgan, a feisty talk show host in San Francisco.

I wouldn't hesitate to donate, myself.

Right. I don't think we should contribute to this group--even if the ads are good we should stick with what we know is effective--the Swift Vets...besides we don't want to stretch things too thin.

No they shouldn't be,but it's undeniable that African-Americans are not a stronghold of Republicanism, and that to many,Al Sharpton still has no small amount of credibility and respect as a leader, even if he's resting on his laurels, and that running ads attacking him would NOT be a way to garner African-American votes, especially in the liberal/African-American DC area.

The ads look poorly produced and wouldn't be seen as very credible. I agree we should stick to backing the SwiftVets, guys who know that they're talking about.
