Sen. John McCain, who has pushed for civility in this years presidential race, is warning that the biting attack on Senator John Kerry by a fellow Democrat at the Republican National Convention on Wednesday night might harm President Bush's efforts to woo swing voters.
McCain said that the keynote address by Senator Zell Miller, (D-GA) could prove as controversial as a speech by Patrick J. Buchanan at the 1992 GOP Convention in Houston.
'I think it backfires,' McCain said of Miller's rhetorical assault on Kerry.
He added that 'It makes Pat Buchanan's speech..look milquetoast.'
McCain made his comments to reporters at a party he hosted after the convention's Wednesday session ended.
Former Nixon advisor Buchanan's speech--in which he declared a 'culture war' was underway in America--was thought by many Republicans to have hurt the re-election of Bush's father, then President George H.W. Bush.

I've never understood the media's fascination with him.
Jeb, Rudi or Condi will not have Democrats voting for him during the Republican primary. McCain is a very dangerous man and I hope conservative Republicans really start to make sure he does not get the nomination in '08.
The liberals in the media know that they have McCain to carry water for them, that is part of the story here.
John McCain hater of both the first and second ammendments....and pro abortion....
Another backed up John that needs roto rootering...
imo
Of course here at FR, we've know that for quite a while now!
After the lukewarm "support" McInsane has provided the President in the last couple of weeks, it appears that he is now trying to get back in the good graces of the "useful idiots".
'I think it backfires,' McCain said of Miller's rhetorical assault on Kerry.
It is because of faulty thinking the above that McCain is a senator and not the President.
Is it true what I hear that Mcbain pees sitting down ;'}
It is a mutual admiration relationship. He loves attention and really dislikes many Republican Senators. The media loves a RINO who will criticize another Republican and will indulge his love of TV face time to do anytime he desires. McCain will do everything he can to minimize the efforts of George Bush without seeming to be disloyal. He plays a, not so secret, sneaky little game and the main stream Press loves him for this.
He always takes a position that he views as contrary to the conventional wisdom. That's why he gets asked on so many programs. In the end, it's face time that counts.
McCain has always been extremely inspirational right up to the time when he opens his mouth.
Us at FR have been on to him for a long time!
Get the toilet plunger for the stopped up John!
Frank Lundtz? on MSNBC focus grouped Zell's speech and 11 of the 17 swing voters said they were more likely to vote Bush after the speech.
As a side note, anyone see McCain's wife at the convention? I haven't seen a picture of her since the 2000 election season, but she looks gorgeous with longer hair. She really is stunningly beautiful...
Well, yes. He wants everyone to be civil. Theres a reason for that. Have you ever seen McCain in person? Hes a little runt. He wants people to be civil in the worst way. If people are uncivil and get excited they might step on him by accident.
Yeah, mental health ;-)
Please....I wish the good people of Arizona would vote this moron out of office already.
What's even scarier is that more than a few comments have been made regarding how McCain may be the best hope for the Republicans in '08. If that's the case, than the party is surely in trouble.
Your boy johnie McBackstabber is at it again.
McCain you dunce. This is exactly why the Democrats with a "minority" run Congress like they are the "majority."
Grow a pair and start standing up to pee!
