Having lived in Germany and working now for a firm headquartered there, I'm of the opinion that the Germans and Europeans misunderstand us even more than we sometimes misunderstand them. Nowhere is this more evident than on how they completely misunderstand Dubya, and particularly his religious beliefs.
The Europeans believe that Dubya's mention of God means that Dubya considers himself some kind of super-agent of God and therefore superior to others, much like Hitler or even De Gaulle considered themselves superior (albeit not for religious reasons). It's almost as if they think he is Ayatollah Dubya.
But Zell put it more accurately when he called President Bush a God-fearing man. The President, in my opinion, does not think he's better than everyone else because he believes in God; his belief helps provide humility which is sorely needed by us all, lest we think to highly of ourselves. It's an acknowledgement that we really aren't so damn smart and clever as we think, and it helps a leader like President Bush execute and use the enormous power in his hands without corrupting him.
This is of course obvious to many of us. It is not obvious to the Euros or, for that matter, to many of our own countrymen. That's a shame. If the Euros really understood the truth, they would realize that the President, far from being a power-mad potential tyrant who thinks he himself is God, is in fact a man of deep personal character, restraint and humility. These qualities are exactly what the world needs right now as head of the only superpower.
