"quoting Caruba's line that 'something is terribly wrong with voters who have demonstrated a virtual death wish so far as any sensible governance of the state is concerned,' dubbed the state, 'Louisiana North.'"

Great quote & most appropo' of Nic to use it.
I've thought the same thing to myself after Clintigula was re-elected & again when the Y2k election turned out [allegedly] to be so close.

"In McGreevey's resignation speech, he said, 'My truth is that I am a gay American. Shamefully, I engaged in adult consensual affairs with another man, which violates my bonds of matrimony. It was wrong, it was foolish, it was inexcusable.'"

A shameless page directly outa the Bent One's playbook.
How very Clintonesque, no?

Now the record:
Charles Kushner, McGreevey's biggest campaign contributor, 'pleaded guilty [two weeks ago] to 18 federal crimes'...
William Watley On July 14, McGreevey's commerce secretary, resigned 'amid reports that he channeled state money to his own businesses and to family members.'
David D'Amiano On July 6, fundraiser David D'Amiano 'was indicted ... on [11] extortion charges...before one of Halper's many meetings with the Governor, he was taped telling D'Amiano that Gov. McGreevey was to use the code word 'Machiavellian,' to signal that the deal was on. Sure enough, McGreevey (aka 'State Official 1') said 'Machiavelli,' which he later insisted was merely an allusion from his rich literary life. ( :o) )
The Attorney General's Office {!!} [has] been run by handpicked McGreevey men, who have conducted themselves more like Mafia consigliere than the leaders of state law enforcement.
Peter Harvey According to Gannett columnist Bob Ingle, AG Peter Harvey 'couldn't find political corruption with a detailed road map.' The March 15 column of Ingle, Gannett’s Trenton Bureau chief, was entitled, "McGreevey administration heading for scandal record." And that was several indictments and resignations ago....[the damning get even *better*]
Joseph Santiago -In a failed experiment in affirmative action, in 2002, McGreevey appointed Hispanic Newark police Director Joseph Santiago superintendent of the State Police, over the protests of law enforcement officials, and in spite of a multitude of red flags (a personal bankruptcy, a conviction for disorderly conduct, and charges by the State Police background investigation that in Newark Santiago had consorted with an associate of the Genovese crime family, protected illegal gambling operations, was involved in a 'no-show security scheme' and used police officers to build his house) in Santiago's past, only to force Santiago to resign on October 18, 2002, after only seven months on the job. (~& the list goes on and on.)
Golan Cipel in January, 2002, Gov.-elect McGreevey provided his alleged boyfriend, Golan Cipel, who had initially been sponsored by Charles Kushner, a $110,000-per-year job as state homeland security chief. (I'll *bet* :o) )...Using the terrorism attacks of Sept. 11 to justify the hiring, the governor's chief lawyer [Paul Levinsohn] wrote a letter to the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service on McGreevey's inauguration day, telling the federal agency that New Jersey wanted Cipel to coordinate increased security with all branches of government and that Cipel had the necessary 'substantial experience' in public security.'...And Cipel had no security background, to begin with. (& there's much, much more surronding the Cipel character but due to the limitations of space & time...)
Billboardgate -In 2003, McGreevey chief of staff Gary Taffet and chief counsel Paul Levinsohn were charged with having used their positions with Gov.-elect McGreevey to make highway billboard ad deals during the 2001 gubernatorial campaign for their secret billboard company, and having profited to the tune of $2.2 million on the eve of the governor's 2002 inauguration. Many of the deals were with large McGreevey campaign contributors, including -- surprise, surprise! -- Charles Kushner. Taffet and Levinsohn were both forced to resign. (& this goes on & on, as well)
Roger Chugh -During McGreevey's 2001 campaign, Asian Indian businessmen in Middlesex County have charged, his [read: McGreevey] fundraiser Rajesh 'Roger' Chugh (who later worked in the secretary of state's office) engaged in illegal fundraising tactics, including 'pressur[ing] them for contributions in the years leading up to the 2001 gubernatorial election, using grandiose promises of gubernatorial appointments, easy negotiation of Woodbridge [whose mayor McGreevey was, while simultaneously serving as a state senator, before being elected governor] oversight boards or threats of retribution.' (WTF, *ordinary* bribery? Hardly seems to merit mention in light of the other stuff, does it...)
Choppers McGreevey turned state police helicopters into his personal limousine service, using them for 272 trips, including fourteen for personal business.
Money ( >?< ~no kiddin'. *Money*? {g}) McGreevey raised taxes, (on the MORONS who voted for him, no-less) spending, and state debt, and caused the state's bond rating to be downgraded.

Oh for chrissakes I can't continue.
Heart palpatations, y'know?
Suffice to say if McGreevey intends having a conventional burial, they'll have to strap 'em to an industrail auger & screw 'em into the ground.

Only thing I'm wondering is just *where* that crooked Senator who resigned, went to the slammer, and tried to run a campaign for re-election from the Big House fits-in to all this slime.
Because y'know he figures into this crap, somehow & someway; but, he sure did -- & remains -- keep his mouth [tightly] shut about all this malarkey, didn't he.

Mark?
You needn't remind me to drive around New Jersey if ever I'm out that way, OK? {g}

Just a(nother) fabulous piece by the "master", Nic Stix.
Really glad to see Nic's still whacking the filthy corrupt 'Rats around with his mighty pen, too.

Do tell Nic I said "Hi" -- if you happen to see 'em -- that this one was a supurb job of "investigative journalism" if ever there was.
A very nice job, indeed.

See joanie?
Aren'tcha glad to be outa that bunghole of a place; which, only just goes to show, kid.

...it can -- & often does -- get worse. ;^)

A big fish gets away
Friday, January 27, 2006

U.S. Attorney Christopher Christie announced this week that he would not pursue corruption allegations against New Jersey's top political boss because of bungling by the state Attorney General's Office. But this scandal cannot end there.  Just who is responsible for the botched investigation, and how will they be held accountable? Is this just another case of politics as usual in the Garden State?   Governor Corzine's choice for state attorney general, Zulima Farber, has said she'll make corruption her top priority. And Mr. Christie has pointed out the state still has two years to reexamine the Norcross case before the state statute of limitations runs out. Before her office can look into any new allegations of corruption, it has to determine who flubbed the earlier investigations.  Mr. Christie recently wrote to witnesses in the case: "The illogical approach taken by the Attorney General's Office lends itself to a number of damaging inferences, including the protection of political figures and the manipulation of evidence."

Read that sentence again. "The protection of political figures": It goes to the core of every cynic's worst suspicion of state government. Ms. Farber must investigate this further, with her own team, and get to the bottom of it.  At this point, the A.G.'s Office will say only that it is making sure that "appropriate corrective action was implemented." When asked if anyone would be held accountable for this mess, a spokesman declined comment. That sure sounds like circling the wagons at a time when they ought to be on the attack.

Here's what the fuss is about. Five years ago, a South Jersey councilman named John Gural went to state prosecutors, claiming local power brokers were trying to get him fired from his job as project manager with a politically connected engineering firm. He agreed to wear a hidden device and record conversations he had with Democratic Camden County boss George Norcross and other politicos.  Over two years, he taped 330 hours of conversations, including 1½ hours with Mr. Norcross. Mr. Gural has claimed that the tapes include the county boss offering him bribes to vote against the reappointment of one of Mr. Norcross' political adversaries as a borough attorney. Mr. Gural has also claimed that after Democrat James McGreevey became governor in 2002, the investigation began to go nowhere. Indeed, the state Attorney General's Office not only closed the investigation two years ago, but it has tried to release as little of the damaging recordings as possible. According to Mr. Christie, both Democratic and Republican administrations were responsible for the foul-ups, with the most damaging missteps occurring early on, when Republicans were in charge.

For instance, the A.G's Office authorized Mr. Gural to record all his conversations all day, even though most of the exchanges were with people who had no involvement in the probe. But when he was attending a local Democratic political event where Mr. Norcross was expected, he was not allowed to secretly tape-record the conversations there. In other words, the A.G.'s Office got it exactly backward.  All of this raises three big questions. Just who bungled the investigation? Do they still work in the Attorney General's Office? If so, why?  If the Senate confirms Ms. Farber next week, her top priority must be to resolve these questions and ensure that the integrity of the Attorney General's Office has been restored.  Right now, that office at best looks like a bunch of political hacks.

And our great and powerful Republican party here in NJ sure did make hay out of all the McSleazy scandals, didn't they?

Oh, that's right, they're out of power everywhere and lost the last governor's race to an outright socialist even though a vaunted "moderate" was the GOP standard-bearer.

The Republicans in NJ are roadkill and the Democrats are corrupt slime-bags. Joy to the world.
