He volunteered for the Swiftboats when he thought they would be restricted to shore patrol. It was AFTER he'd volunteered that the Navy decided to send them up the rivers!

I have the distinct feeling Kerry was aiming at becoming a Navy "lifer" until that moment. From then on his ambition was an early out!

Maybe, but he didn't have to volunteer for VN "brown water" duty at all. If he'd wanted to ensure staying offshore, he could have stayed on his destroyer (like I did). He could have completed that cruise, then never had to worry about VN again probably.

OK, enough of this, because I don't want to be put in a position of defending Kerry, I'm just trying to keep the details straight...
