What they were defending was the back shooting incident.
They defended Kerry against accusations for this, and frankly they still do. The back shooting was acceptable in war time with an armed enemy soldier.

I think that we are going to learn that the reason Kerry's FIRST Purple Heart wasn't awarded until 3 months later (and by whom?) was because.....
the other officers promised him if he would leave immediately they would get the three Hearts together so he had his ticket out. But ONLY if he agreed to leave. Otherwise, they were going to expose him for something terrible that festers within him to this day

Evidently they were defending Kerry because of the guy he shot in the back. Which I have heard O'Neill talk about. The guy was shooting at Kerry's group and then he turned and ran away and Kerry shot him. I don't have a problem with that - it's part of the hell of war.
