Edwards Sued Red Cross Three Times - Vanity
ABC John Stossel and The New York Times ^ | August 25, 2004 | eartotheground

I know this sounds like a joke but I am not kidding. Edwards sued the American National Red Cross three times in the 90's apparently and obtained a confidential settlement in each case. Anybody have any more info?

Do a google for red cross mismanagement. Could be any number of things. There's a book called Bad Blood about some (apparent, haven't looked into it) tainted blood scandal. That could be it.

This will test the loyalties of many misguided Freepers who believing rumors and wives tales, have an intense dislike for the Red Cross.

Rumors and old wives tales? Do you remember what happened after 9/11? The Bloody X solicited donations for the victims of 9/11, but then kept the money for other things.

Uh, oh. This could get ugly, seeing as how the President of the American Red Cross from 1991 to 2000 was North Carolina's other Senator, Elizabeth Dole.

Of course, Edwards will chase an ambulance anywhere, anytime. h

I think that was United Way who fumbled the money and gave a bunch to totally bogus groups, etc.

The issue with red cross is old, but it had to do with overhead. They were paying exorbitant salaries etc.

From what I understand, due to Edwards work, several of these hospitals were driven out of business leaving people without care.

"Rumors and old wives tales? Do you remember what happened after 9/11? The Bloody X solicited donations for the victims of 9/11, but then kept the money for other things."

Exactly... and then they just didn't "get it" and continued to refuse to allocate funds where the intent of the donor had been clearly identified.

The dislike for the Red Cross was the fraudulent use of funds collected after 9/11, PLUS the fact that they were handung money to the Taliban while we were fighting in Afghanistan. They were openly helping our enemies with our donations.

Fairy tales? Do your research.

If 9/11 was the only high jinks for that organization over the many years it might be excusable, as blatant as that was.

Our family history with it started in previous wars. "A man with an experience is not at the mercy of a man with a bias". Too much mismanagment experience for too little result.

The suits were for HIV transmission by blood prior to HIV testing. Red Cross settled these suits because; 1) it would cost too much to defend, 2) jury trials are crap shoots where you can lose big, 3) these suits would be reported widely tarnishing the image of the Red Cross, 4) the publicizing of these suits would sully the reputation of E Dole (this is only speculation, numbers 1, 2 and 3 are facts).

Edwards sued the Red Cross? I knew there had to be something I liked about him.

Here is my personal experience with the Red Cross....

In 1996, my home was totally underwater for 3 days following a flood. Everything we owned was destroyed.

The Red Cross came in, made a lot of media appearances when they first arrived.

Finally a few hours later, they set up concession stands where they charged victims and rescuers alike 2.00 for a can of coke, and 4 dollars for a sandwich that was either two pieces of white bread, with a slice of cheese, or bologna, or a pimento cheese sandwich.

But hey, the cookies were free, as long as you only wanted two of them.

The second the media left the area, so did the Red Cross.

The Salvation Army on the other hand, kept away from the media. I personally watched one of them tell the media that they did not have time for tv appearances, they had people to take care of and then walked away.

They brought sub sandwiches, cold drinks and chips. They provided bottled water. We were not allowed to pay them anything. They refused to take it, saying that we could give a donation later, once we got back on our feet, IF we wanted to. They made it clear that they did not expect anything from us in exchange for their help.

They made up cleaning kits that had various cleaning solutions, a sturdy bucket, and a couple of brushes and scrubbers, along with rubber gloves. They drove around and distributed these to every family.

For a full week after the media left, the Salvation Army stayed there with us.

They fed us, they helped us clean up, they prayed with us and they were there for us.

The Red Cross did absolutely nothing more than what I told you.

The Salvation Army was incredible.

After my experience with the Red Cross, I can say with relative certainty that the "rumors" as you call them, probably aren't rumors at all.

The nickname "The Bloody X" dates back to WWII. This sort of @#%#^$ goes way back. I thought the most effective argument against "The Red Cross is as pure as the driven snow" would be an incontrovertible example that was recent and still bitter in our memories.

Your report is consistent with what I've heard for years about the Red Cross and the Salvation Army. (I love the Salvation Army!)

I am soooo happy to read your post.

I never knew any of this about the Red Cross. I did hear a little about them mismanaging the 911 money.

I am happy because just two weeks ago I cleaned three of my closets out and I had ten bags of new to hardly worn nice clothes, some were designer clothes as well.
I was trying to decide which charity to give them to, and someone suggested the Red Cross. Then at the last minute I called the Salvation Army to come get them because I remember my mom telling me they helped her and my grand mom out when she was younger.

I am glad I changed my mind and gave them to the Salvation Army now that I have read this thread.

Nice retort. Now, would you care to respond with something resembling factual debate to counter this personal story, or will the BS personal attack be your only response?
