Large houses are somethig new?

I don't think so.

I have a Victorian (built in 1883) that's 3900 sq. ft.

Large houses are nothing new. The predominance of large houses is nothing new. The problem isn't that large houses are being built. The problem is as the article hints at, a lack of smaller houses being built. The end result is a class stratification of home ownership.
