For nearly two weeks, Senator John F. Kerry had refrained from commenting directly on the crescendo of attacks on his Vietnam War record. The work was being left to campaign aides, who were scrambling to control the escalating damage being done by a television ad and a book that alleged that Kerry had lied about his combat service and did not deserve his medals.
Then, Wednesday night, Kerry told his aides that he had to act. As he sat down inside his Louisburg Square home on Beacon Hill, Kerry scrawled two phrases on a yellow legal pad about his antagonists, a group called Swift Boat Veterans for Truth. The group, Kerry wrote, was "a front for the Bush campaign" and "he wants them to do his dirty work."
Overnight, this new strategy by Kerry resulted in a hastily produced ad defending his war record and a speech in which the Massachusetts senator responded in detail to the group's charges. The question, however, is whether Kerry acted too late, letting the attacks grow on the Internet and talk-show circuit to such a degree that some swing voters think one of Kerry's core characteristics has been undermined.
"He had to do it," said former senator Bob Kerrey, who was tapped by the Kerry campaign to write an opinion column in The Washington Post defending the record of the Massachusetts senator.
"It was gathering a life of its own, and he had to respond. He couldn't do it through surrogates. He had to confront it himself with facts and passion."...............
Kerry had made Vietnam a centerpiece of his campaign, surrounding himself with crewmates at the Democratic National Convention and portraying his combat experience as preparation for being commander in chief.

He's going down with his fool and his ship.
Unfortunately, the only people watching PBS are pretentious asses.
On the other hand, Chris Matthews looked like a real jackass last night, but then not even the jackasses and pretentious asses watch Hardball.
And don't forget, he has a good bit of puffed rice shrapnel in that skinny butt.
The charges made by the Swift boat vets are scoring hits on his already shaky campaign.
So far the lame-stream media has chose not to give the vets the time-of-day, but Kerry has now forced them to! In fact, besides smearing them... he then smeared the president for actually being behind their actions!
Brit Hume on FOX said last night that Admiral Lehman rewrote Kerry's Silver Star Citation... and elaborated on it from the official, original version. This was done in 1986. IT WAS 'ENHANCED'! The vets have also stepped up to the plate and repeated their stories again and today they will put out another TV ad! THE MEDIA NOW HAS TO LET THIS THING RUN ITS COURSE!
If Kerry has ginned-up his service record, the facts will come out. He has already retreated on the 'Cambodia' fantasy and the accusations of mass war crimes. Now we hear that there was no hostile fire when the Rassman 'rescue' took place!
'Unfit for Command' is selling quicker than the publisher can print them. America wants to know the truth... since Kerry has wrapped himself/campaign in Viet Nam glory.
Enlisted men does not like officers who aggrandize their service records. Right now we have thousands of maimed soldiers laying in bunks in Germany, Walter Reed and hospitals all over America. We cannot let these charges get brushed aside without a full disclosure of the events.
We owe our vets this!
Behold the Boston Globe doing investigative journalism! To make sure they know for sure what's going on, they attend Kerry's campaign planning meetings in his home. Then they rush right back to tell the public what the Truth is. So when is the Boston Globe going to register as a 527? |
....We owe our vets this!
BUMP!
How right you are! If not for Ted Kennedy covering his Ass, he would have been imprisoned. America is still hurting from this guy's Vietnam lies. Below is someone else who didn't hold him in very high regard.
Major General George S. Patton, the son and namesake of the World War II armored commander was a veteran of combat in the Korean and Vietnam Wars.
He was wounded in one of his three Vietnam tours and was awarded a Purple Heart. He was twice awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, the second-highest decoration for bravery in combat.
General Patton charged that he had experienced proof in the field that John F. Kerry's antiwar actions had given aid and comfort to the enemy, just as had those of Ramsey Clark and Jane Fonda.
Mr. Kerry, said George Patton, probably caused some of my guys to get killed. And I don t like that. There is no soap ever invented that can wash that blood off his hands

If Kerry brings the ad up in the debates, W should mention that he has been subjected to attacks, but he didn't whine about it.
Doesn't that post say it all!
That trip ended last Saturday, followed by four days of vacation in Idaho; he returned to the campaign trail Wednesday for a speech to the VFW, where he did not want the controversy over his Vietnam record to detract from his new attack on Bush's plan for redeploying 70,000 troops from Asia and Europe, aides said
And I love this part:
So Nace began talking with a small group of Kerry friends known as the dog hunters.
It was in 1984 that the dog hunters first organized. Kerry's Democratic primary opponent, James Shannon, had said during a televised debate that if Kerry, who became a leading critic of the war after he returned from Vietnam, "felt that strongly about the war, you would not have gone." Kerry responded that Shannon was insulting veterans, adding, "That dog won't hunt." A group of Vietnam veterans rallied to Kerry's side and became known as the dog hunters, helping Kerry in subsequent races, including in 1996, when questions were first raised about Kerry's Silver Star.
Now the dog hunters, including Nace, were mobilized for another battle at Kerry's side.
Look how long they have been organized to fight these "rumors!!" Twenty years!!!!
"..It's eating him up"....Awwwww..
Is this some of the staged footage that Kerry had his fried shoot on the video camera the he, (Kerry) conveniently brought with him to Vietnam?

C-span is replaying Michelle Malkin, there's about 40 minutes left. it's l:52 pm.
He should never, ever have been entrusted with any office or any responsibility over us.
What really has my attention are the attack dogs his party have turned loose! Not too afraid of having the American people hear the debate, are they?
God bless the Swifties!
Kerry was keen on assuming the Kennedy mantle. As for the Reform Act, Walinsky at the time was a chief legistlative aid to Robert Kennedy. The attribution to Ted was no doubt a throwaway to boost the prospects of the litter runt.
This is the biggest event in politics since the Boston Tea party.
Kerry is just trying to divert attention from the swift vet allegations.
