His voice rising to a yell, Republican U.S. Senate nominee Alan Keyes told a bipartisan civic group Wednesday he "will not budge" from his belief that descendants of slaves should be exempted from income taxes to help heal the wounds of past discrimination and segregation.

What a clown. To think that I almost voted for him in the presidential primaries last time.

Keyes is using this as a precuser for tax cuts for all. It's a brillant strategy when you think about it, even if he loses the Senate race. The libs are falling all over this.

The odd thing is, most blacks don't pay federal income tax because they are in the lower half where very little federal income tax is paid by anyone. In fact many people get money back as a result of the earned income tax credit. The big winners would be athletes and rap stars, who would save millions.

They are pretty much already exempt from income taxes, given that they tend to be at the lower level of the income spread and the lowest 1/2 of the income earners only pay 3.5% of the income taxes in this country.

I don't have much of an opinion on this except to say that if there is a segment of the population not paying taxes those of us who are would have to carry more of the load. Go back just two generations and all of my ancestors are Native Americans from up state New York. As far back as my family knows we never had any slaves, but If they (the government )ever makes me pay for one, they better give me one! Race isn't important but if I have to pay for a slave then I should get one! ;-p

The subject has been beaten to death here, but you have to give him credit here for sticking to his guns.

"This is an historic opportunity for the Republican Party, and if the Republicans have any sense -- a controversial issue on which I take no position -- they will make the most of it by backing Keyes to the hilt." - Thomas Sowell

Most black voters are not so dumb as to see that they have little if anything to benefit from this. All it does is disable our argument against reparations based on the greater principle of striving for a color blink society devoid of discrimination in any direction.

This will be seen as political opportunism on our part, and will be used as ammunition against us. Democrats will take the lead as the voice of reason and moderation in the working class.

Sowell is as wrong as anyone can be.

If the door is ever slightly opened on reparations, it will never close. After no income tax it would be "no, not healed yet, you owe us more..." - it would never end, the "wounds" would never "heal".

And I suppose I shouldn't have to pay taxes either, to make up for all the discrimination and prejudice experienced by my people--women. Ridiculous.

I said this before, I'll repeat it.

Asking the federal government for "slavery reparations" after the efforts made by the federal government to end slavery makes about as much sense as European Jews expecting compensation for the Holocaust from the allied troops who liberated the concentration camps.

If Keyes made the suggestion that blacks living in former slave states should be forgiven their taxes, there would at least be a little logic to this. It might prompt a second civil war, but the devil is always in the details...

Let me make this clear to Mr. Keyes and anybody else who's willing to listen - My white ancestors fought and died on battlefields from Pennsylvania to Georgia in a bloody struggle to free blacks from the bondage of slavery.

I'm still waiting for a single black person to express any gratitude for that sacrifice. And I'll be damned if I'll agree to have my tax money go to pay "slavery reparations" to the descendants of the slaves that my ancestors suffered so greatly in order to free.

Stop talking like just another "All I want is to live off white peoples' taxes" black politician, Alan. You have no idea how much damage you've done to your credibility on this issue...

"The former presidential candidate disdainfully brushed aside questions over whether his suggestion should apply to rich African Americans such as Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan or Oprah Winfrey."

Or himself.

Just out of curiousity, does Mr Keyes have a plan to determine who is descended from slaves and who is not?
