GOP Chairman Questions Matt Connealy’s Ties to Radical, Left-Wing Group that Supports “Deep Cuts” in Military Spending

Nebraska Republican Party Chairman David Kramer today raised serious questions about Democrat congressional candidate Matt Connealy’s ties to a radical, left-wing group that supports “deep cuts” in military spending.

An Associated Press article published in Nebraska newspapers on Saturday, August 14 discloses contributions to Matt Connealy’s campaign for Congress from the left-wing, radical Council for a Livable World. According to its website www.clw.org, the Council advocates “deep” cuts in national defense spending, supports elimination of several important defense programs, and opposes a national missile defense system. Furthermore, just days after the September 11th attacks on America a leading member of the Council proposed negotiating with the Taliban government in Afghanistan.

Kramer said, “The Nebraska Republican Party is raising very serious questions about Matt Connealy’s relationship with this organization and his support from this organization. We are also asking that Matt Connealy clarify his stand on a host of defense-related issues . . . issues important to Nebraskans.”

Out of the many hundreds of candidates for the House around the country, Matt Connealy is one of just sixteen candidates to be endorsed and publicly supported by this radical group. Matt Connealy’s association with this organization raises serious questions about his campaign for Congress and, specifically, his platform.

“In the interest of full disclosure, this morning we faxed a letter to Matt Connealy asking him to answer several questions,” continued Kramer.

1) How did Matt Connealy’s relationship with this organization come about? Did they contact him or did he contact them?

2) Did Matt Connealy seek the endorsement and support of this left-wing, radical organization?

3) Has he met with the leadership or members of this organization?

4) Did Matt Connealy fill out a questionnaire to gain their support? If so, we ask him to release the questionnaire.

5) Does Matt Connealy support “deep” cuts in national defense as does the Council?

6) Does he support cutting or eliminating the B-2 Stealth Bomber? F-22 Tactical Fighter? Commanche Helicopter? F/A 18 “Super Hornet” Fighter? These are all positions held by the Council.

7) Does Matt Connealy oppose a national missile defense system? Again, a position held by the Council.

8) And does he support the Council’s call for negotiation with the Taliban government in Afghanistan in the days following the September 11th attacks?

Kramer said, “Nebraskans deserve to have answers to these important questions. Nebraskans deserve to know where Matt Connealy stands on these issues. We know about the Council for a Livable World’s agenda.”

Kramer continued, “Why did the Council decide to throw its support to Matt Connealy? What do they know about him that we don’t? What has Matt Connealy promised this radical organization? What is Matt Connealy’s agenda?”

Kramer concluded, “Why has Matt Connealy aligned himself with a group that supports “deep” cuts in our national defense? Nebraskans deserve to know.”

Matt Connealy is the DimocRAT that is running to replace Doug Bereuter in Congress. As you know, Bereuter is in the news today for showing his RINO stripes. His self-picked successor, Kurt Brohm, was beat in the primary by Jeff Fortenberry. Brohm was opposed by the Club for Growth, and was one of that organization's first successes in the primary campaign in eliminating RINOs.
