Ed Koch is about as liberal as you can get in New York politics, and if he's backing Bush it's another serious blow to Kerry's campaign.

Here is another article with more detail, written by Koch, in which he explains why he is supporting Bush.

Ed Koch: Why Bush Must Be Re-elected
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-gop/1177308/posts

Shortly after 9/11, President Bush announced his commitment to the struggle against Islamic fanatics, who believe they can destroy the values of Western civilization and democratic governments everywhere. On entering this war against terrorism after 9/11, President Bush said, “We shall go after the terrorists and the countries that harbor them.”

This Bush Doctrine rivals in importance the Monroe Doctrine, which limited the colonization efforts of foreign powers in the Western Hemisphere, and the Truman Doctrine, which contained the spread of Communism. President Bush has proven that he is prepared to keep to his commitment to fight terrorism.

If John Kerry were to win this presidential election, would he stand up to terrorism to the same extent as George Bush has? I don’t think so. Regrettably, my party, the Democratic Party, now has a strong radical left wing whose members often dominate the party primaries. Those same left-wing radicals have an anti-Israel philosophy, reviling that democratic state which shares the values held by a majority of Americans.

...

But it was President Bush who had the courage to take up arms in defense of the U.S. and our allies. That is what leadership is all about.

In my opinion, the U.S. presidents who have been Israel’s greatest friends are, in order, the current President Bush, Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton. This November, we Americans in the Jewish community should remember our friends. We should thank President Bush for his courage in the war against terrorism and for his strong and consistent support for Israel and democracy.

Read the whole article. Koch really slams the Democrats.

In New York politics, Koch was moderate compared to bitter rivals Mario Cuomo and David Dinkins.

Not really, Koch is an old scool New Deal Liberal in the classicsense of the word. He is no socialist or communist. He has often made comments to the effect that "the Left hates the country." He certainly has distanced himself from the Clointon crowd. As mayors go he is just left of center. Both Lindsey and Dinkens, for example, were much farther to the left than Koch.

I have my problems with Koch, but he was a good mayor.

Former Mayor Koch understands terrorism, as does President Bush. Kerry is very weak on this issue - extraordinarily weak!!! Kerry prattles on about raising taxes, health care for every American, creating one million new jobs while he never really explains how he's going to accomplish this. Nor does Kerry explain how he's going to fight terrorism against America except to turn the fight over to the United Nations (please read my tagline about the UN). Mayor Koch understands terrorism as the biggest issue confronting Americans and how we may wind up like Israel. We had friends and relatives at the WTC on 9/11. One friend's daughter was at a business meeting at Windows on The World. They never found a piece of her. She left behind a husband and two sons - six and nine years old. I have other horror stories about 9/11. But just let me say, Kerry is not the man for the job. President Bush is and anybody who votes for Kerry is putting their life in extreme danger. American social problems won't matter diddly squat if you're dead by the hands of Muslim terrorists. If we could only ask the 3,000 victims on 9/11 the same question.
