So, I look forward to your thoughts. Will this natural disaster hurt Bush II? And, yes I know, it was all Bush's fault to begin with!!

This may cause the national economy to stall before the rebuilding efforts start in earnest and trickle into the economy. Might not be soon enough.

It's 80 days till election day...... Will the effects be measured, reported and felt so that they would impact on a national level within that time period. In FL the effects will be immediate both pro and con as clean up and construction begins....

In 1992 President GHWB bush won Florida by 40.89%, Clinton 39% and Perot 19%. And Hurricane Andrew cost 25 billions back then in 1992 and there was not quick emergency supports as we are seeing right now.

Stewart Varney and Brian Wilson should shut up and do some research before they open their mouth and make all those doom and gloom scenarios about the effect of Hurricane Charley on the economy and the election.

I cannot believe the crap I am seeing on Foxnews lately. They are becoming as bad as CNN and MSNBC.

We cannot trust Foxnews anymore. We need to have a conservative cable network, period.

Quite the opposite. W. and Jeb will ride to the rescue. Kerry can't go there, he'll look like he's pandering.

I sure hope not, but it seems that Pres. Bush can't catch a real break.
One thing is the shortage of building supplies in the US right now. Concrete prices are way up, rebar, lumber, everything. Lots of these supplies are being diverted to China and Iraq.

Silly question! National disasters helped re-elect Bill Clinton.

Clinton wasn't impeached for "feeling up" Monica, because he had done such a fantastic job of feeling our pain.

The notion that a hurricane helps the economy is a variation of the classic "broken window fallacy": A broken window increases the wealth of the whole community because it provides employment for the police, the social worker, the glazier, and the insurance agent.

Natural disasters make the population as a whole poorer, and they make every individual poorer except the people who benefit directly from the funding of the recovery.

Will Hurricane Charley Cost Bush The Election?

No Bush will cause it.

As with the destruction of the twin towers and the damaged Pentagon, with a large amount of lives lost, well, who else can be blamed? /s

From other talking head shows, though, people vote what the economy was 6 months before the election. They won't actually feel that much difference this close to an election.

Also, Bush comes across as genuinely concerned. If Kerry shows up in FL, though, he'll just come across as another politician. He doesn't do the "I feel your pain" with any sort of sincerity (unlike Clinton who was especially good at faking it).

I don't think it will hurt Bush at all.

President Bush is not stupid. I'm sure he will be right on top of the situation in his brother's state with money and supplies etc. I feel this will help him not hinder him. IMHO

My thoughts were that if Jeb stays there in the media looking like the sincere guy that he is., and

W comes down there and offers lots of support and help.(People love promices of $$$, and stuff)

Hopefully FLoridians will see how they benefit from these two great guys.

Even if I grant the thesis that GDP will be reduced, by the time the effect is felt, the election will be over.

Economics in polls are usually trailing indicators. Witness the recovery that began in 1992 but came "too late" for Bush 41.

come on, this could cinch it for him, if he handles it right!
he needs to pull out the stops, use the incumbency and be as opportunistic as possible in the next few weeks. win the votes of all the floridians he can by doing a "rudy."

I think it will bode well for Bush.

By being able to pump in massive amounts of aid to the state, Bush can win over the sheeple who want something for nothing.

Not to be heartless, but I travel all throughout Florida.

No he will not lose because of this. If he reaches out and takes care of the people, he'll win again.

They're just making up some wild-a$$ garbage to see if they can gin up any interest in the TV show, for cryin' out loud. It's meaningless, inane and stupid -- just like about everything on TV. They want to suck in viewers so they throw a wild theory out there in the hopes it will be dramatic enough to get someone to watch. It's just about all the media does these days.

Diasters tend to make the president look good. Clinton was rescued by Oklahoma City, according to his own people. (I have some thoughts about that!)

I think W. will work hard to help out the state, regardless of its role in his re-election. I wish he would get more sleep. He often looked frazzled. That is not good.

Kerry announced another vacation. Between the hurricane in Florida and the her-a-cane in New Jersey, he can't rent a headline. Besides, he tuckers out easily. Kerry will continue to lose momentum and duck Cambodia, NJ, etc.
