I can tell you what probably happened to the Red Cross money, as I used to work for them. If my memory serves me correctly, I believe it started with hurricane Andrew. They were getting too much money for previous disasters, because people would send in money and designate it to "xxx tornado", or "xxx hurricane". If money was designated to a certain disaster, the money would be put aside for that disaster and nothing else. Well, they always ended up with too much money from the generous donors that they couldn't use for other disasters.

Starting with Andrew, they had held telethons to raise money and specifically told people to make their checks out to "disaster services" instead of "Hurricane Andrew". That way they could redirect the money to other disasters if needed. I was so mad at that time, telling them it was wrong to do that. People were believing that their money would go to the "Andrew" fund, but in reality, the Red Cross could use it for any disaster. I understand that they got more money than needed and they wanted to use it for something else, but I was mad that wasn't being told to the public. They should have told them by making the checks out to disaster services, the money could be going to a future disaster.

So, If you choose to donate to the Red Cross and want the money to only go to "Hurricane Charley", state that on your check. If you don't mind it going to another future disaster, state it as "disaster services".

My prayers go out to those in Florida. We got lucky here in North Carolina. We have a few damaged trees and lots of water(no flooding), but all is well.

You are so kind!
Thank-you for the input.
I'm here in Alabama, and all we got was rain from Bonnie.
We needed it.

This is good to know about how to give.
ie-writing the disaster name on the check.

But I do remember the mess about 9/11.
And people were meaning every penny go to our citizens.
The Red Cross probably got more out of that disaster than all the others combined!

And yes, many prayers for the folks down there and everywhere these hurricanes have disrupted their lives!

I pray for the effort to get them back to normal.
And comfort to the families that have lost loved ones.

And welcome to Free Republic!
