Musicman, I know you're just sitting around with nothing better to do :), so please explain your internet connection to us.And your power.
Do they have it coming ashore around Brunswick County?
Are the winds from the west?
North?
Oooooooh yeah!
I even still have an "I survived Hugo" sweat shirt!
Looks like they're estimating landfall somewhere on the northern half of the South Carolina coast...Georgetown on up to Myrtle Beach.

Very rough there. I won't sugar coat it: the Ft Myers station is reporting many hundreds of people homeless and without shelter of any kind. Go to this video stream, get the phone numbers, call in live and give your family's approximate location, they may be able to help you. Good luck and prayers for your kin.
My mom and several family members live in Port Charlotte/Punta Gorda. I heard that many homes were flatted in Punta Gorda and that windows were blown out from many homes in Port Charlotte. If anyone has info on what the damage looks like there please post. Heard on tv that they are predicting power to be out for at least a week, so contacting my family will be difficult.
Thanks
Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too early to be sure about its return to land.
Too many things can change overnight.
I was in a solid, brick apartment building near downtown Raleigh during Fran, so I wasn't worried about property damage. I was worried about our very first brand new car that we'd bought 2 days before. Falling trees crushed several cars and came through several apartment windows, but our apartment and our car were fine. I stayed up that night listening to and watching the transformers blow. My husband slept through the whole thing. But we got our power back on Saturday evening (Fran came through Thursday night/Friday morning), a lot sooner than a lot of the rest of Raleigh.
No, we'll be ok here. Our house is on pretty high ground and we've also had the wisdom to remove about 25 more trees since then too.

I wasn't living down here for Hugo, but from the stories I've heard (even well inland here in Columbia), that has pretty much got South Carolinians conditioned to be wary of hurricanes for at least another generation.
Now I *was* here for the Great Floyd Evacuation Snafu. Anybody who thinks a hurricane can't seriously contribute toward costing a politician his job, ask our former Rat governor, Smilin' Jim Hodges!

They just slammed not to long ago...
Well, that's close enough to me to pay close attention.
The west side of the storm is much weaker.
We'll know tomorrow.
Nightline just reported Emergency services simply can't even get into many areas in Port Charlotte/Punta Gorda. Wish I had better news for you.
Rep. Mark Foley just mentioned on FOX NEWS that the new CIA director lives on Sanibel.
Around Georgetown, SC. Click on the link in #2297.
I had to drive down I-85 from Richmond to Greenville, SC on the morning that Fran grazed Richmond. I remember waking up about 5:00 am to one godawful THUMP against the side of my apartment building...it almost felt like someone drove a car into it. Later on the radio, there was an unconfirmed report that a funnel cloud went right over my apartment complex.
85 was a mess on the Virginia side of the border, trees down here and there. It got better getting into NC, but there was no power for 150+ miles...couldn't find a working toilet between Richmond and Greensboro, and man, that's a LOOOOONG way to hold it! :)

Thanks!
