Terry in Turquoise By The Prowler Published 8/10/2004 12:08:45 AM
TENDERFOOT KERRY Just who wears the pants -- and carries the cash -- in the Kerry family became embarrassingly clear over the weekend, when, while shopping in Albuquerque, John Kerry had to let wife Teresa cover the cost of jewelry he wanted to buy for her.
Terry Kerry pulled out the $125 necessary for her hubby to buy her a turquoise necklace. While the Senator seemed perturbed at the situation, the missus acted like this was business as usual, chirpily thanking the mature woman behind the counter in Spanish: "Muchas gracias, abuelita." ("Thank you very much, grandmother.") The candidate, on the other hand, gave a half-hearted wave and walked out of the shop.
Kerry's whole New Mexico trip was a bit of disaster. For part of the day, in an attempt to play "regular guy," the Massachusetts senator wore new cowboy boots procured for him by Gov. Bill Richardson. "But they made his feet sore, and we had to get them off," says a campaign staffer.
Kerry also went shopping for a cowboy hat, but apparently some staffers were able to cut him off at the cash register before another embarrassing photo op could develop.
BUSHWHACKERS So much for Sen. John Edwards' "Two Americas." Over the weekend, Edwards, who's "Two Americas" stump speech was said to have enticed the Kerry campaign to put the North Carolinian on the bottom of the ticket, apparently dumped the stumper and ripped off Democratic hottie Barack Obama's convention speech.
At rally in Lawrence, Kansas, Edwards told the audience: "There is no red state, there is no blue state -- there is only one United States of America and we're going to serve this entire country."
Edwards' appearance in Lawrence resulted after the train he and Sen. John Kerry were on sped past a scheduled stop in the town a day earlier. The Kerry campaign was criticized mercilessly in the local press for passing up a throng of supporters waiting to greet the Democratic ticket at the train stop, so advance staffers organized a quickie pep rally.
So what happened to "Two Americas"?
"There is a segment of the campaign, and it's growing by the day, that doesn't think that speech is working very well," says a Kerry adviser. "In fact, we'd like it ditched. The problem is Edwards loves it. Kerry loves it. And the media really buys into it and promotes it for us. We just don't think the voters buy it."
Edwards, according to the source, liked Obama's speech and has been using the line in smaller venues, where he doesn't believe the national press will pick up his appearances.
COMMAND CONFIDENCE According to a Kerry campaign source, senior campaign advisers tasked two Washington-based campaign staffers to vet the recently published Unfit for Command.
"The purpose was to compare what that book had with what we had on file from Senator Kerry," says the campaign source, who said that the research project developed more than 75 instances where Kerry's recollections, previous remarks, or writings conflicted with the book's reporting.
"We took some of the most glaring examples, like the Christmas in Cambodia story, and presented them to senior staff, and we assume that those things were put in front of Senator Kerry," says the source. "We haven't heard a word about it. All we were told is that it was being taken care of."
The campaign source said that the book was not considered a "serious" problem for the campaign, because, "the media wouldn't have the nerve to come at us with this kind of stuff," says the source. "The senior staff believes the media is committed to seeing us win this thing, and that the convention inoculated us from these kinds of stories. The senior guys really think we don't have a problem here."

Gee, you mean the media is biased?
Gee, you mean the media is biased?
Well, when you are a KEPT man like Hanoi John, it is a commonplace event for the one wearing the pants to sport you.
Gee, you mean the media is biased?
BTTT
The convention doesn't innoculate him from those stories, it makes him highly vunerable to them.
If the Vietnam experience is all he has, discrediting him on Vietnam could kill his support among swing voters. I see that as being a pretty easy call.
D
That's because the reporters would be fired by their bosses for disloyalty to The Party.
Calling the "mature" woman abuelita ....
Ok who was the un-PC one?? MATURE WOMAN for old woman or asuuming that htis was a heterosexual matronly woman and calling here "grandmother" ??
Being called "Abuelita" by a stranger - a GRINGA to boot - is insulting and degrading - it is similar to "boy" being used for any male over 18. But that won;t be covered as a RACIST statement either.
Here's the very heart of Kerry's - and Edwards' - problem: they don't even know how out of touch they are!
125 bucks for a turquoise necklace? Cheap too. (Old joke)
Bwahahahaa...teeheheheheee...
Bush can ensure victory in New Mexico in Three Steps:
1. In Albuquerque or Farmington give a speech about how the EPA has a responsibility to protect animals, but should do so rationally and responsibly and not at the expense of the people of New Mexico by draining precious resevoires and jepordizing future water supplies. Speak how water policy will be as important as energy policy and should be developed now! From there Seg into how the Natural Gas of New Mexico as a clean fuel has an important role to play in the energy policies of the future.
2. In Los Alamos Stump (pun intended) on his Wildfire speech and point out how he wants to stop our forests from going up in smoke by sensible forest management, rather than shrugging off modern wildfire as a "natural" part of the ecosystem. Hold up the Native Americans in praise for their stewardship of their lands. Thank the men of the Mescalero Apache tribe for risking their lives each summer around the country fighting wildfires. Also thank the citizens of New Mexico for their support of science and the Federal Lab systems, ensure them this long standing role as a backbone of research is one that will only expand under his leadership.
3. In Las Cruces(My home town! Given in spanish which he speaks well) Talk about how the family is the core, and how he believes faith based and community organizations, ones own neighbors and family can help those in need better than welfare and the federal government. Speak to how he would like to promote the family, the values of the people of New Mexico. Thank those members of the military throughout the state protecting our freedom. Thank the citizens of the state for providing much research, and land for training our soldiers and developing new sources of security like Missile Defense. Thank New Mexico for its largely un-publicized and important role in space exploration. Lastly thank New Mexico for Green Chili!
When in New Mexico be seen eating a Green Chili Cheeseburger at the Owl cafe (preferably in San Antonio). Be heard conversing in spanish. Wear a bolo tie or no tie. Do not reference Texas, no matter how badly you want to talk about your ranch in crawford. Do not talk about immigration at all ever. And try not to make any Aggie jokes, wrong aggies anyway... but do talk about Brian Urlacher and Notah Begay.
