There are many FREEPERS, I am quite certain, that have given up on the idea they can get their weight under control.
At the same time, a core group of Freepers MUST be out there that at one time had a weight problem, but somehow achieved a weight loss to an appropriate weight ... and kept it there.
This forum has been one of the most beneficial expeditures of time I have ever experienced. There are many things I've noticed where FREEPERS help each other out and my hope this can be the case with this as well. To those of you who have won the battle (getting it off and keeping it off), please post your secrets ... even if they are politically incorrect!! Thanks!!
(Also, for what its worth, my 'secret' is that I've noticed at least one person who has followed closely Dr. Ezrin's 'endocrine control diet' has lost 60+ pounds ... but the effort is still underway and is only a year old.)
here are my thoughts:

Surgical amputation.
Just post a thread that bashes the Atkins Diet and you'll smoke out tons of posts from Freepers sharing their low-carb successes.
It really is that simple. Unfortunately, many people lack the discipline to make what, for them, is a radical lifestyle change. I struggle with it every day.
The smell of ozone...
A Viking Kitty...
A massive ZOT
and hundreds of pounds of stinking socialist
flushed away.
So far, I've managed to drop from 490 (yikes!!!) to about 340, so I've got about 100-120 pounds to go.
Get off the couch.
There is/was a ping list for the low carb crowd here .... but that's not what I'm hoping to smoke out here on this thread.
All I want to try to pin down is the thoughts of those FREEPERS who, regardless of diet type, actually went all the way down to their goal weight and basically remained there.
I'm betting there is a common theme among those kinds of success stories in FReeper land.
The only thing that will get me to lose weight is falling in love and that ain't gonna happen, got too old and crotchety for that too happen.
Started smoking again, started drinking hard liquor instead of heavy beers and increased the rate at which I guzzle tremendous quantities of coffee any given day. Never been healthier!
EAT LESS & EXCERCISE MORE
Ok. I think most of us know the mechanics of getting it off. But, some of us do need the reminder, so thanks.
However, for those who did experience the increase in will power, self discipline, whatever you want to call it, to nail down those basics, day after day, something must have clicked. That is the secret I'm after.
Weight Watchers is my weapon of choice. I lost all my baby weight (about 35 pounds) approximatly five years ago and have never gained it back. You eat what you want-just in reasonable portions. It is inexpensive and can be found im most locations. I also workout at Curves three times a week. At 42, I am in the best shape of my life.
I just lost a pound from laughing!! (Talk about an appetite killer)!
Falling in love DOES make someone lose weight, esp. us wimmin. All the worse, if it doesn't work out you gain back ten times what you lost *LOL*
That would also work for a lot of registered sex offenders.
I've kept off 100lbs (was 320 now 220) for a whole year, initially from the Atkins diet. I now generally eat high-protein, low carb 98% of the time. I endulge in real bread, noodles, and/or sweets at least once or twice a month, usually at birthday parties/family-get-to-gethers and such. I also try to get some moderate exercise at least 3 times a week.
