Family Rottweiler attacks 2-year-old [and her father shoots it dead]

A 2-year-old girl was mauled by her family's Rottweiler dog Friday morning.

The girl's father, an East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office detective, shot the dog to death to end the attack, according to a firefighter who helped treat the girl.

The dog attacked the girl just before 8 a.m., biting her several times in the legs, arms and chest.

A firefighter who helped treat the girl said the detective, Terry Felton, began hitting, kicking and choking the dog to get it off of his daughter. He then pulled his gun and shot the dog.

The girl was first taken to Baton Rouge's East Side Fire Station to be treated.

"She was conscious and screaming and crying," said Bob Gatley of the fire department.

Her family then rushed the girl to Summit Hospital before she was transferred to Our Lady of the Lake Hospital.

The Sheriff's Office said the little girl was scheduled to undergo plastic surgery to treat the bite wounds on her body.

From the title, it appeared he shot the kid.

I love dogs but I still can't understand why people keep such large ones around small children. Even in cases where the dog doesn't mean to hurt the child it can by its mere size. This doesn't give all the specifics but I'm glad the Dad was more concerned about his daughter than the stupid dog.

Absolutely the wrong breed to have.

Have children? Get a purebred collie. Loyal guardian of the entire family and homestead, gentle with children, most forgiving. Does not assault the family, breed is not inclined to do so.

Unlike that Rottweiler, putbull, chow...

Several breeds bite, some kill frequently. Avoid German Shepherds too.

Get a Collie. Lassie is truly the best choice.

Why didn't he just call 9-11? Kinda like the rest of us are supposed to?

I had a Newfoundland when I was a kid. Very large (much larger than a Rott), but as gentle and loyal as any in dogdom. Bred as a water rescue dog. .....But they don't do well in hot weather.

When you bring a new baby into a household with a grown dog....the dog thinks it needs to put the child in its place...or worse get rid of a rival

All dogs need to be properly socialized and trained in how they must act around little kids they also regular exercise as well as regular obedience reminders...big dogs even more so

The danger is always there and kids need to be protected and dogs properly disciplined

imo My family's prayers are for this little one...and may the God over all of us...have mercy on her and heal her both physically and her and her family emotionally of such a terrible thing to happen to her and her family....May God have mercy on her father and mother for the guilt they must also feel...

The dog should be put down or sent someplace like Iraq to guard prisons... imo

Man, it's surely good to be away from the east. Both of the girl's parents should be imprisoned for first degree assault, IMO.

What a horrible thing to have happen!

I'm glad the dad had a gun and the guts to use it. He probably would have lost his little girl otherwise.

I used to work with a Customs Inspector who was attacked by two pitbulls on his own front porch when he went home from work one day. He had his service revolver in his holster, and he is alive because he did. He killed one of the dogs with two shots. The other was shot three times and still ran away.It was later caught and euthenized.

Collies won't assault the family; and they are wonderfully protective; but the Lassie personality might be more mythic when it comes to 'outsiders'/ non/family members.

Bottom line; people need to understand a dog's strengths and limitations when it comes to family and non family alike. . . .

and yes, some dogs should just now be part of a family equasion.

"THOSE WHO HAD NO FEAR DID NOT REPRODUCE"

Maybe that's because their cowardly owners shot the most courageous ones in their backs. ...explains as to why their owners became Democrats for so long afterward.

We just sold our first litter of purebred collies, five children under roof here, 14 to 2.

Collies have been part of my family for 30 years now.

I think Collies are great dogs; and yes, great with family; and they are very protective of their family.

Pets ate jealous of anything that subtracts from the attention they are accustomed to getting. that can be a new pet, child, whatever.

Any animal, however gentle or small it might be, could react to anything getting the love the pet is used to receiving.

Don't leave animals alone with newborns.

Thank god the man was carried a Republican philosophy.

That little girl would of been dead if he were a liberal.
