I think this story is overblown. Everyone knows Ron is an idiot, and Nancy is not obligated to do anything in public. She just lost her husband for goodness sake.

The truth about federal funding for embryonic stem cell research will put an end to RR's fantasies.

Compared to Zell Miller, no doubt we got the best of the bargain!

Gladly I leave the animal planet host to the dems! Very fitting.

Horseshit.

The Dims had Ron Reagan, the GOP has Zell Miller!

Ol' Zell will give a stump-thumper of a speech, and make Dimocrat "consultants" everywhere wonder if they're just not living right!

When I voted for Reagan Nancy was Not the reason why. No big deal that she won't be speaking at the GOP convention. I sure hope the GOP asks Michael Reagan to give a speech at the convention.

Nancy is a grieving widow who just ended 10 years of pure hell. Her coming out now would be abnormal in my opinion. She probably just wants to sit at home, rest and look at pictures of the happier days with her husband. The last think she wants is any more negativity.

As for Ron. He is an a$$.

Bush can reverse all that by simply allowing Stem Cell research. Let us leave theology and religion to its rightful place the heart of man. Politically opportunism dictated by few knuckle dragging born again nutcases is not good for science and medicine. The fanatical Moslems do similar stupidity; they will not allow a male doctor to examine a female patient! Nutcases should stay in caves and not be allowed to dictate policies in the 21st century.

Rather hyped up story.

I doubt she would have made an impact anyway.

Hopefully Michael Reagan will speak.

Nancy Reagan may have many reasons for not appearing - the death of her husband, her age, her health, the influence of the "Ballerina" on her.

"The Ballerina" is an evil and twisted individual. The equivalent of King Arthur's Modred. Personally, I think he is a changling. Ron's real son is somewhere else and the evil trolls left "The Ballerina" after stealing the President's real son.

If there is one thing I've learned from watching politics, its that nothing is a "done deal".

We won't know about Nancy Reagan til the RNC convention takes place.

And I certainly won't besmirch Mrs Reagan based on a column from a reporter that refers to her as a "former actress".

Think about it......

I saw Gillespie make his comments.

The media is trying to make it look like they were desperately trying to get her to attend to counteract Ron P Reagan's demcon appearance. The Republicans did no such thing. When asked, Gillespie said she's welcome to attend. He said she's a GWB supporter and reminded the reporters (who are worse than dense) of the kind of year the woman has had.

End of non-story. It isn't the Republicans who are trying to fan the flames between family members.

Isn't Nancy Reagan a bit old to speak at a national party convention? She looks quite frail, and has not spoken in public in over a year.

The real story here is not the stem cells. That's not an issue and will have minimal impact on the election.

The real story is the "story within the story". The behavior of certain members of the Reagan family, with stem cells as the byline.

Ron is going to fade into the background blathering on about an issue to which few people are paying attention, once the initial novelty of seeing a Reagan addressing the Democrats fades away. He has no gravitas on this issue-or any issue for that matter, and he will once again be left sniping from the undergrowth.

Let's stop slamming people, please!

Every family has people in it that don't exactly make the rest of the family proud.

And...

Not every family member (except mine--because I insist on it * ;-) follows straight Republican Party lines.

My Mom is 83, and very much in shape; but using her as a guide, I was shocked to see how much Nancy did, flying back and forth AND dealing with the death of her beloved--knowing full well she HAD to be there--she wouldn't miss it.

The Republican Convention is NOT something she HAS to be at, and another cross-nation trip would put HER health in jeopardy.

The Republican Party asked her to attend, because she would be welcome. She has every right to say, no...I just can't do it..it's too much.

Why can't people see this?

*(FYI - the family members I'm referring to here are 46, 57 and 83 year olds)

I've always thought that Nancy Reagan was a perfect wife to Ronnie. She put her whole heart into creating a good relationship with him. But I also think she was calculating. Did you know Reagan married her because she was pregnant?

It wouldn't surprise me at all if she never really believed in Reagan's politics.

Can Republican leaders convince her to tape an appearance, like Margaret Thatcher did for Ronnie's funeral? That could still be very inspiring to attendees and the TV audience.

Nancy was married to her husband for over fifty (50) years. She was his caregiver, an emotional shock at any age, for ten (10). She, herself, is elderly. She has already paid tribute to her husband during the week of his passing and again when the carrier named for her beloved came to its home port of San Diego for the first time.

IMHO, she should NOT go to the '04 convention just to be used as a religious relic by the GOP. She should be allowed to rest and finally mourn the love of her life.

I'm gobsmacked at so many of the ignorant, arrogant and TASTELESS comments on this thread who see Nancy as their personal pawn to be used for politic advantage, not a feeling, dignified human being.

Leave NANCY out of this.

Much to the dismay of the Bush campaign, Nancy Reagan has just said no to appearing at the Republican National Convention next month. GOP strategists had hoped the former First Lady and Hollywood actress would make a cameo appearance onstage after a video tribute to her late husband, particularly after her Bush-bashing son, Ron, agreed to speak at the Democratic convention last night.

Too bad.
