An eight-story office building which was leaning precariously for days in one of Manila's busy commercial districts, collapses Friday July 23, 2004, hours after occupants fled in panic following creaking sounds and bursting water pipes. There seems to be a lot of poorly constructed buildings in east Asia.

It's like they have no Building Codes....

I recall the building collapse in Egypt not long ago, they added 3 more stories to a 5 story building.

Oh yeah, it'll hold............

If the building had been leaning precariously for DAYS, then why were there occupants still inside the building only HOURS before the collaspe?

It looks like the building itself was pretty strong in the 1st 2 pics. It must have been a foundation problem.

Maybe they skipped that expense to keep costs down.

I'd guess that paychecks must have been distributed inside at the time.

Undoubtedly a French engineer designed it.

Must be one SCARY boss or realllllllly dedicated employees. At that angle you would need an anti grav unit or velcro floors and shoes.

When the coffee cups started sliding off tables, that's when I would of quit.

....why were there occupants still inside...

Because it hadn't collapsed yet, so they didn't really need to leave until they were sure it was collapsing. This is incredible to me. I bought all the material for the women's gowns for my first son's wedding in this area some years ago. It's the best bargain hunting place--where goods are distributed to other areas of MetroManila, so the prices are lower. However, it's not the easiest place in which to shop. Oh, those were the days!
