I knew many Republicans who voted for Clinton in 1992, thinking his welfare promises and his foreign-policy statements (from Iraq to Israel to China) were more conservative than then-President George H. W. Bush's. -William J. Bennett

Well, at least that won't happen in 2004.

The liberation of Iraq was a positive good, with or without WMDs.

Interesting what-if: What if Kerry/Edwards came completely clean on this point? I suspect the base would be a little demoralized, not much, but fence-sitters would tend to vote a little more Bush/Cheney.

I seriously doubt that the RATS will heed what I believe is good advice.

They're so corrupted I wonder if anyone's listening. I hope middle of the roaders take note of this piece.

Bennett is exactly the kind of democrat that could win against Bush.

The democrat party is like a dying horse, kicking at people around it trying to help. (Bennett, for example.)

Good one. Unfortunately, only the lead singer of Herman's Hermits is listening (Noone.)

They're not going to listen, they're too wrapped up in their hatred to even think clearly now. The ONLY thing that will bring them to their senses is to lose big. I'm talking losing seats in the house, the senate and a big loss on the presidency. That would actually be the only thing that will actually save the democrat party.

Thank you! That needed to be said, and I wouldn't alter a word of it...

Actually, I would not put "lick wounds" and "gird loins" together like that. You're mixing species. One or the other.

Now is the time for your new revolution; do not — in your heated passion — squander this moment.

Dream On Bill. Why give them free advice while they're self destructing. I hope they let M. Moore speak at their hatefest.

It almost sounds like he's giving up on Bush?

These DEMONcrats need to be squashed like the bugs they are.

Seriesly squashed.

That was true, no doubt about it. I didn't vote for Bush Sr. in 92. Nobody in my family did. The times were different.

Nice words in the article, Mr. Bennett. They make sense to me, but when pigs start flying Democrats will heed them. They've gone too far down in the muck to ever come back now.

I think I just learned this week that Democratic party is incorrect, it is Democrat party. If I'm not mistaken, GWB pronounced it correctly at his speech today at the urban league. If true, Bennett makes his first mistake in the title of his piece. This is well written, but of course his intended audience is too preoccupied with hate to listen and besides I have trouble taking Bennett seriously for a variety of reasons - mainly because he always looks and sounds like a pompous windbag.

I knew many Republicans who voted for Clinton in 1992, thinking his welfare promises and his foreign-policy statements (from Iraq to Israel to China) were more conservative than then-President George H. W. Bush's. Indeed, several personnel at conservative think tanks even celebrated the 1992 defeat of then-President Bush.

They were wrong then, and some are wrong now who say they intend to do the same sort of thing.

Hope those who did this were happy with Bill Clinton, who singlehandedly sold out this nation to communist China, and allowed terrorists to have free reign to kill our citizens.

Good article, but let the rats be the rats, and just hope the American people reject this group of hateful socialists who lead them.

former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright (now a John Kerry advisor)

Couldn't he find any new "talent"? Rerun of Clinton 1 & 2. No thanks! She was part of the problem why we are where we are today and 3,000 innocent people are dead.

I was a Democrat who voted for Clinton for the same reason. I did not leave my party - my party left me. I hope they take William Bennett's reasoned advice to heart.

Clinton won because he sought the middle. He steered his pitch away from the McGovern left of their party, which had lost in 72, 80, 84, and 88.

The McGovernite left is back in control of their party. Flip-flopping Kerry is trying to be every thing, to everybody in their party.

Bush's challenge is to pitch the middle and with 9 weeks to go, he's getting into campaign mode. Democrats can't be trusted with National Security, which trumps all issues in importance.

I am optimistic. I listened to the 911 Commission, which debunks a lot of the lefties claims, about Iraq and terror fighting.

Bush isn't perfect on conservative issues, but there is no reasoned comparison, with the alternative. I truly hope 3rd party people will see this with clarity, and vote for Bush.

We need those few percentage points.

Good article.

The Old Media has been continuously raising the bar for Republican candidates and officeholders, while continuously lowering the bar for Democrats. As the saying goes, "That which does not kill us makes us stronger."

As a result, the Republicans have evolved a cadre of candidates who are above reproach ethically, always speak the truth, and only take issue positions that they can defend against the onslaught of the Old Media juggernaut.

As a result of the Old Media bias, Republicans have evolved and fine tuned methods of by-passing the Old Media and communicating directly with the voters.

On the other hand, the protection and immunity the the Old Media has given Democrats has resulted in cheap hucksters and immoral scam artists rising to the top of the party. An honest man doesn't have a chance within the Democrat Party today>

The Old Media is keeping the Democrat Party on life support with no prospect of a strong new ethical class of politicos coming to its rescue. Kerry and Edwards really were the best the Old Media could do.

If President Bush wins convincingly, the Democrat Party as we know it can be removed from life support and buried.
