Reports now that at least one of the planes was actually an EA-6 out of Whidbey Island Naval Air Station. This would make sense, as these aircraft constantly train on a military operations route just north of the Columbia River from east to west. In fact, I saw one a few days ago, proceeding about 550 MPH at an altitude of around 500 feet over the Horse Heaven Hills. It very well could have been one of the aircraft involved today, if, in fact, one was an A6.

The word we got earlier here at the FAA is that it was 2 f-18's and that shoots had been spotted..

Update;
A lone E-6 Prowler exploded over the Columbia Gorge east of The Dalles this afternoon, and at least one pilot appears to have survived. It was initially reported that two Navy F-18 fighter jets collided. But Salesky said there were two Prowlers in the area. After one plane exploded, the other Prowler circled the area.
